Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

So whats the reason??

You can say a$$ or arse in English, and no one raises an eyebrow… someone types G***** and all hell breaks loose. You can talk about masturbation and call it jacking off or slapping the monkey or wanking or anything else and no one cares, but you use a common word used for it in Urdu and everyone (inclusing myself) would think thats just plain rude.

There are several other examples. So why does this phenomenon exist?

Is it because for most of us, Urdu is a first language and English somehow feels a bit more disguised in the rude words category, atleast in the medium level rude stuff??

Does using rude words in Urdu make us seem less refined because of some subconcious complex that English is cool or makes us seem more educated and hence more proper and sophisticated and well mannered?

I dont know… I mean these are both languages, but I know we have a bias against our own language. At the same time, we think its the most poetic beautiful language as well if you get into the whole poetry and romance etc. Why?

Is it because we think its a very proper language at its core, and has very non-offensive words if you use proper hardcore urdu… and turns very ugly and rude when you start talking slang?

your views?

Yes :D

you are right :-p

Re: Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

For some reason native language slangs carry more power.
It is like lasssi has more power than coke. Chapli Kabab has more zing than steak. Bun kabab has more taste than burger.

Re: Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

The obscene words of English are also not allowed in Gupshup. The censor identically follows the similar rules which are followed on national TV broadcast...

Re: Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

Re: Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

cricketplaya:

There is no decent word for that as far as I know.. not that I know any indecent word either...

Let's concentrate on the topic instead of explicitly using the words...

Everyone, please do not make this thread a play ground of using obscenity. It's simply not allowed.

views hmmm
the words you are writing are not urdu to begin with :)
please feel free to use the word koolha aur painda.
even tashreef ka tokra is okay

Oh dont make me laat maar on ur big tashreef man. G**** is urdu... so what if its borrowed from Punjabi or Zulu or whatever... say G**** to even an ass in Pakistan and he'll know what you're on about... Tell someone they have nice koolhas and they might look at you weird.

Re: Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

the issue is not just with the word but in teh context it is used, it applies to english words as well, the words making love are allowed, fornicate is even allowed but the f-bomb..well thats not allowed..

Re: Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

Thats so true. I think its the same thing with people. When I see Americans doing something bad I dont give it a second thought but when I see desis or muslims doing something bad its like ewwww.

Re: Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

So People find it easy to speak such words in English . . .:halo:

I cant speak such words in any language . . . though we have created our own word for Tashreef (TEMPO) . . .:hehe:

Re: Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

rude words are rude in every language. those who think English is more accommodating when it comes to rude words are simply using it as an excuse to hide what sorry morons they are.

oh well, forget it.

desis consider urdu more rude in gneral bcss..............
they have an inferiority complex.they r mubtala in an ahsaas e kamtri .they r insecure with their own language and culture...
which is pathetic!

Re: Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

Good thoughtful thread KAB.

Agree with your assesment. Many bad words do sound very bad in Urdu or any local language than in English.

Reasons:

1- We learn our local language from beginning or at home and get the sense/meaning quicker than when we hear words in English with same meaning.

2- Mom and Dad and local TV/Radio/other media never used these words or even discouraged using these words.

3- On the other hand we hear these 'bad' words more commonly in English media...so we become sort of used to of these words.

4- Insecurity as mentioned by soni about our own language to use bad words plays smaller role while using bad words..but plays stronger role when NOT using bad words...
such as we are proud to say hello! personally (or over the phone) but not As-Salamo-Alekum or Aap Ka Kia Haal Hai?

In other words....
Its just 'cool' to say something good or even bad in English!

Treatment is difficult.

This may involve:

1- No allowing bad words even in English specially if has bad intention..no matter how trivial.

2- Allowing some words in Urdu or other local language if the person is describing something as a matter of fact. Such as word "Haiz" instead of menstruation, 'Ikhtilat' for sex, 'Zachgi' instead of pregnancy etc.
So many medical programs tend to avoid these kind of words in local language but very openly mention same thing in English.

Same thing in description of body parts..... There are better words for body parts like "Qazeeb" for....male part.

3- Not making fun of local language words.

indeed :)

I can tell you exactly how but AQ will delete my post then :chai:

Re: Urdu vs English Why do desis consider Urdu more rude in general?

Actually there is a very definite reason why Urdu/Punjabi words are more obscene than their corresponding English counterparts. It is actually a truism that is based on the language itself.

In the science of language or linguisitcs it is commonly understood that concepts are developed by terms. It therefore means that language of a given nation will direct the way they think. Urdu being a generally proper language designed for respectable society when contrasted with such words has a greater impact. English on the other hand has recently become a descriptive and legal language removing the concepts of morality and shame from with in it. The effect is that words are used to accurately depict names of things without the care of how those words are perceived.

Furthermore as dual language people it is easy for us to switch concepts when we switch between languages.
