Urdu Speaking People..

A question, I do not mean to offend anyway, but why do you (as a group) still cling to a name provided to people who moved from India? After all there is no culture, language, identity to being Mohajir is there?

^^Well i guess there is ....As most of the Muhajirs/Urdu Speaking people came from North India having a pretty similar culture(Mainly Dehli,UP/CP & Bihar along with Hyderabad Deccan in the south, all Muslims....making very much Urdu Speaking Muslim belt of India)....About 15-20% of Muhajirs were from Dehli ...40-45% from UP/CP ,15-20% from Bihar & another 10-15% from Hyderabad Deccan or Madras....Rest are a combination of Gujratis,Bombay Memons & Bengalis...
Ghulail another good review....especially for the contribution of Muhajirs in the development of Karachi & Pakistan...

abdul qadeer khan and jinnha mujahirs?

^^ Hey you have used the spelling that Indians use typically for Muhammad Ali JINNAH...

I personally don't mind referring myself or having others call me an Urdu-speaking/mohajir because that's what I'm.

I think both Goliko and ghulail did a great job explaining this issue.

Though the first generation may have a similar culture Goliko, is that the same for the children? I personally don't think so. The second generation as can be seen in this thread has grown up outside Pakistan (mainly in the West I am guessing), so does that mean they share the same culture or traditions that were in the northern part of India?

u saying moving to a diff country changes how u are brought up??? are u saying pakistanis in the west or anywhere outta pakistan dont follow their culture or traditions anymore?????????

for example hyderabadis anywhere and everywhere still wear their kurta pyjama and love to eat khatti daal

i know for myself and family.. we still follow and do things the same way my per nani did back in delhi...from the way we cook to the way we talk.. our family traditions are pretty much intact... ofcourse.. this varies form family to family... but ppl dont just give up their culture or traditions just cuz they have moved to a diff country .

you go girl :k: for example i am eating khutti daal and chawal right now

well... when i heard ppl callin me mahjir and urdu speaking.... i changed my nationality to Indian.. Yup! I m from U.P!

How can the culture change???I mean the parents are the same...If 10 million Punjabis went to live in Madras...would they become Madrasi???I don't think so...I guess in this case involuntarily or without knowing a Punjabi culture would be preserved or may be born there...

Khawateen the answer to your first question is yes. A culture does define how people are brought up. Secondly no I did not state that at all as I personally was brought up in the US all my life, if you exclude the periods when I was in Europe.

Now it is extremely difficult to say the cultures and traditions that are in place, where you live (I am sorry but I have no clue where you are staying) are the same as those nearly 60 years ago in India. There are changes in thoughts, what is acceptable and what’s not. What is good and what is bad. It is only natural. However I personally believe Mohajirs are by no means a community unto themselves as they were merely created after independence and from my limited knowledge of Pakistani history, it really wasn't an issue until the military dictatorship of Zia-ul-Haq.

The meaning of Mohajir is that of one who moves or travels to a new place and settles. By that definition anybody who moves away from their home land is a Mohajir. Does that mean a Sindhi moving to Canada is all of a sudden a Mohajir? I personally believe no.

The identity of being a Mohajir was created out insecurity in a new land. It is by no means a separate culture or regional identity. After all Mohajirs who settled in NWFP and Punjab do not refer to themselves as Mohajirs, at least not in the cases I have met. I of course do not hold a monopoly on the truth and can very easily be wrong. But from personal experience and information I have gleaned from other sources, this is the conclusion I have reached.

no no.. i wasnt talkin bout mohajir culture cuz ofcourse, its not just ONE culture.. i was responding to u sayin that once ppl move out of pakistan or r raised abroad... they dont follow their culture all that much... it had nothing to do with mohajirs...yes ppl shouldnt be still callin themselves mohajirs now ..... but its wrong to say that just cuz we have left india we dont do some things the way our ancestors did back in bharat.

i wasnt talkin bout mohajirs at all :)

Does anyone know what a Khoja is? Is it a Muhajir caste? Or Shia sect? I know this guy and he insists he is Punjabi and according to him his surname "Ahmed" is a family name lol, but I know he's a Muhajir and a Khoja but I don't say it because I don't want to offend him.

Does anyone know what a Homo-sapien is? Is it a Human caste? Or Neanderthal sect? I know this guy and he insists he is Planet earth-ian and according to him his surname "Martian" is a family name lol, but I know he's a Human and a Neanderthal but I don't say it because I don't want to offend him.

I've heard urdu speakers referred to as "bhaiyeh loag"

^

I have heard punjabis being referred to as daggay and chopaye, and pathans being refeered to as akhrot. not sure that there are similar bigoted terms for balochis and sindhis, but looking at the track record in our country, I can bet that they all that groups are referred to with some idiotic demeaning terms as well, all is well I suppose.

The greatest bigotry against Sindhis and Balochs is to deny them the oppertunites other Pakistanis enjoy.
