Re: Urdu speaking Pashtuns from UP
What isspecial about being a Khan?
Since Pashtuns have ruled parts of northern India that's why I believe khan is considered a symbol of honour.

you mean slave mentality
Re: Urdu speaking Pashtuns from UP
They can do it if they want. The word KHAN does not necessarily mean Pashtun.
This word signifies only one nationality, and that is MONGOLS. It was due to the respect associated with Mongols that people in this part of the world also starting calling themselves Khan.
Based on the above, if there is any group which has the most right to call themselves KHAN then it is HAZARA, who are said to be the remnants of Mongol army of Genghis Khan.

In short yes.

Sorry but people who ruled most parts of northern India were Mughals, who were Turko-Mongol people.
Pashtuns moved to northern India along with many other groups of Muslims from West. Yes, there have been some Pashtun dynasties in India, but then so have been dynasties from other groups as well. In fact, most Muslim dynasties of early last millennia were Turkish.
It is because of that huge Turkish and Persian influence that we see on the culture of Muslims of India. When we depict a king in our stories or movies, he always wears Turkish dresses instead of shalwar-kameez of Pashtuns. Try searching for Uzbekistan and see how much their traditional dresses resemble our royal dresses. The language of Muslims of India, Urdu, derives majority of its vocabulary from Persian. Even the Arabic words present in it came through Persian. There is hardly any Pashtu word in Urdu.
Re: Urdu speaking Pashtuns from UP
I believe ghauri was a Pashtun, and then shershah suri, ibrahim lodhi, and durranis.
Re: Urdu speaking Pashtuns from UP
I opened a thread once, that although most invaders from our west were not pashtuns but many people think so.

Actually its turks of central asia and afghanistan who introduced title of khan to india, they themselves borrowed it from those mongols who got assimilated with them in central asia. Many Afghans/pashtuns were nobles in the courts of turk sultans of delhi and later mughals so they also got titles of khan......
Why it became exclusive to pashtuns? because pashtuns were the most numerous settlers in india among all. Turks, mughals and iraninains were limited to cities while pashtuns settled in different parts of india as land-onwners/zaminder in rural areas.
After decline of mughal empire in 1707, mostly pashtuns migrated to india.....They took advantage of weakened mughal empire and established their rule on various area most notably rohailkhand, farrukhabad, bhopal, tonk, jonagadh etc
Re: Urdu speaking Pashtuns from UP
There was a sizable community of Pashtuns in UP. Even a whole area had Pashtu origin name, Rohilkhand (roh=mountain). It now comprises cities like Bareli and Rampur. This means that even though they now speak Urdu but they were originally from yousufzai tribe of Pashtuns. One famous Urdu speaking person with Pashtun origin is Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar.
There were Pashtuns in other places as well, like Bhopal and Hyderabad. I read that Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan also has Pashtun heritage.
Are there other famous Urdu speaking people with Pashtun heritage that you know of?
1-Dr. zakir hussain, 3rdr president of india, afridi of malihabad.
2- Josh malihabadi, urdu poet, afridi of malihabad (people of malihabad are mostly afridis)
3- Nawab bahadur yar jang, muslim leagui leader of pakistan movement, kakezai pathan.
4- Maulana mohammad ali jauhar and shaukat ali jauhar , yousafzai rohillas from rampur.
5- mushtaq ahmad yousafi, urdu writer, yousafzai from tonk (rajisthan)
6- generel akhtar rehman, ISI chief who played key role in afghan jihad, a rohilla yousafzai.
7- Dr. AQ khan, pathan from bhopal (bhopal was ruled by orakzai pashtuns)
8- sahibzada yaqub khan, a rohilla pathan from U.P
9- Madhubala, bollywood actress, pathan from delhi originally from mardan.
10- junaid jamshed, pathan family from delhi
the list is very long
Re: Urdu speaking Pashtuns from UP
Dilip Kumar, Yusuf Khan, is a Peshawarii paThaan...i dunno if he is Pashtun or NOT...looks like he is by his looks...other Bollywood Khans are 'Naqli Khans' except Sanjay Khan, Feroz Khan, Qadar Khan and Amjad Khan's families.
oye kuch guzara kar..............i have watched pashto interview of qadir khan, search it on youtube.......he has migrated from afghanistan.
another pashto speaking pathan in bollywood was amjad khan, that vilian in sholay film.
feroz khan and sanjay khan's father was from afghanistan while mother was from iran if their claim is to be believed... i am not sure about them.
irfan pathan, salman khan and aamir khan might be naqli pathans or may be their ancestors were pathans and they are now diluted due to intermarriages with locals.
Re: Urdu speaking Pashtuns from UP
thanx for finding it out on your own...MaliHabad doesn't have any sizable Pashtun community per se...his forefathers prolly came from AfGhanistan and settled in Shahjahanpur/Rampur areas of UP where we see a lot of people who look like Pashtuns. there are a large number of students from these areas at Aligarh Muslim University and i personally had a few friends whom you could easily mistakenly identify as Pashtuns/AfGhanis.
we used to jokingly say that everyone should get married to beautiful girls in Shahjahanpur and/or Rampur! :D
Because Rampur , shahjahanpur, bijnor, bareilly, farrukhabad, malihabad etc were ruled by pashtuns in 18th century....thats why you would find urdu speaking pathans there......i actually met an afridi from malaihabad, he was quite light-skinned, he told me they strictly marry within their own community.
Re: Urdu speaking Pashtuns from UP
Are marwatis asli or naqli pathan?
Re: Urdu speaking Pashtuns from UP
...
My dada! Yousafzai pathan but from Aligarh. Wish I knew more though.

People in this region, including muslims, speak in local language, called, Kannaji, Farrukhabadi, braj etc. I generally saw muslims of this area mostly using local dialect rather than Urdu :)
Re: Urdu speaking Pashtuns from UP
British also gave titles to their subjects as KhanBahadur and RaiBhadur, so spread of Khan might be those families who got it. It is good that Sir title is not used in that way :D
