Re: URDU GREATS (of 50's-60's-70's)
I agree GN and yes, I am not putting down the service that Zia Mohiyuddin provided my introducing the literature back to us in more hip form.
ANJUMAN e TARAQQI e URDU…karachi…and FEROZESONS (Clifton) are loaded with such books by MAKY, INSHA, NOON MEEM RASHID, SHAFIQUR RAHMAN…the list goes on…
Allhamdoulillah…at my end…hand picked from Dad’s library..I have a good collection of some most reckoned books…including the fantastic ones like; ISMAT CHUGHTAI KE SAU AFSANE and the famous letters titled TUMHARI AMRITA !
Re: URDU GREATS (of 50's-60's-70's)
Great tribute to one of the best urdu poets we have read in our life.
The aspect which makes him unique and more loveable that he never tried to use difficult words in order to make his poetry impressive. His poem carry simple worlds but are very poetic

Arjay we are looking forward for more information. Carry on
Re: URDU GREATS (of 50's-60's-70's)
Post 25.....It comes quite clear on my facebook album and has been commented by quite a few fbfs..though. Nevertheless..I'll scan it again and post it by Monday.
Post 26.......next one is MUSHTAQ AHMED YUSUFI by coming Monday..Insha'Allah.
Thank you both;
Raju Uncle
MUSHTAQ AHMED KHAN YUSUFI;
Banker, Humorist and Intellectual…was born in TONK-India on 4th August-1923. He did his M.A (Economics) from the Aligarh Muslim University and joined the profession of Banking. He migrated to Pakistan in 1944 and joined the AUSTRALASIA BANK LIMITED of a Punjab Group. The Bank was founded by Dr. Allama Iqbal at Lahore. With the passage of time…MAKY rose on senior assignments and finally became the Managing Director of the same Bank.
By late sixties—his humour and short quips started meeting the eyes and ears of enthusiasts…those who had the flair of Urdu Adab and did not consider that URDU LANGUAGE would destroy Pakistan.
In August-1973 he applied for a senior post at United Bank Limited–where he was offered the post of a SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT after an interview by two senior executives at UBL. MAKY refused the SVP slot and requested the EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT slot..which was refused by the management-UBL.
The midnight of 1973-74 (31 Dec) saw the Nationalization of Pakistani Banks…and the 1st of January-1974 saw MUSHTAQ AHMED YUSUFI enter UNITED BANK LIMITED as it’s new PRESIDENT at the orders of Bhutto’s Government’s Ministry of Finance (Dr. Mubasshir Hasan being the Finance Minister)…!!!
MAKY became immensely popular as a banker-cum-humor story and quips writer. His adlibs and spontaeneous quips earned him fame far and wide. He regularly contributed in various magazines of high astitute.
MAKY became no.1 intellectual and TOP humorist of Indo-Pakistan for his wonderful selection of words and fitting them so beautifully with the very meaning…to bring out pleasantness for the reader or the audience..
Critics and enthusiasts have stated " HUM URDU MAZAH KE ‘AHD-E-YUSUFI’ MEIN JEE RAHE HEIN " and that’s quite authentic by many counts.
His humor is best seen in his books; KHAKIM BA’DA’HANN - CHIRAGH TAL’LE - ZARGAZISHT..which won him Adamji Adabi Award and the collection of five long articles titled “AAB-E-GUMM”.
It has been my honor to have worked under MAKY as my Bank’s President till he left in 1977 to become the Chairman of Pakistan Banking Council. Thereafter…it has always been wonderful to attend the gatherings back at my Dad’s house and at various other places including the Arts Council of Pakistan to hear something old and something new from Yusufi Uncle.
MAKY was also the GM at BCCI in London with Agha Abedi…where he also supervised the URDU MARKAZ under BCCI alongside IFTIKHAR ARIF and REZA ALI ABIDI.
Yusufi Saheb lost his wife a year or so back…and since then he has been a little downunder–but slowly returning back to normalacy.
Long Live Yusufi Saheb and thanks to him for providing us such merry and wonderful articles and essays.

Buhat khub DB:k:
Jamiluddin Aali
belongs to that select group of men of letters whose literary interests and activities have spanned a very wide portion of the literary spectrum. His true métier is poetry and prose in which he has been perpetuating the traditions of his family.
In poetry, Mr. Aali has been an innovator par excellence, in so far as he has revived the classical form of doha and adapted it into Urdu imparting a distinct South Asian Muslim cultural flavour while retaining its beauty. Besides doha he has also written ghazals, poems, lyrical ballads or geets and patriotic songs. His long poems reflect a unique discourse on great Scientific and Philosophical themes, blended with aesthetics.
In prose, Mr. Aali is known for his incisive and picturesque travelogues with subtle but effective patriotic undertones and his newspaper columns he has been writing for past 45 years, have played a very significant role in awakening the laity to the need of intellectual pursuits and mature thoughts on contemporary national and international issues. This prose style is unique and comprehensive to all classes of readers. His mission has been the search and dissemination of knowledge.
He has been acknowledged by eminent critics of the Urdu world as a trend setter. Mr. Aali has been very active, multi-dimensionally, in the development of national language by virtue of his close, purely honorary, association with Anjuman-e-Taraqqi-e-Urdu Pakistan for the past 45 years. He has been instrumental in the publication by the Anjuman of around 300 books and manuscripts to which he has contributed learned introductions which speak volumes of his erudition and scholarship. Mr. Aali has also remained the Chairman of Urdu Dictionary Board.
Under the aegis of this very Anjuman he was associated as Honorary Secretary for 12 years and Honorary Administrator for three years with the Urdu College, which evolved into two prestigious institutions. The Urdu Science College Building was raised during Mr. Aali’s tenure. He was highly instrumental in growth of the English-Urdu Dictionary of Dr. Moulvi Abdul Haq and in the arrangement and publication of some rare manuscripts and great classics has been one of Mr. Jamiluddin Aali’s main passion. ***
***Furthermore, he has also vehemently served for the expansion of the Urdu College into Federal Govt. Urdu University and remained the Deputy Chair of its Senate for 3 years. ***
Mr. Aali has been associated with the development of not only the national language and its institution, but also of regional languages. He is one of the principal founding fathers of the Pakistan Writers Guild which has a membership comprising men of the letters of all Pakistani languages. Mr. Aali has been constantly devoted to services for the welfare of indigent Pakistani Writers and the bereaved families of those who are no more.
Mr. Jamiluddin Aali as an expansion of his activities also entered the field of practical social science. He has been a Senator from Sindh in the upper house of parliament where he was also elected as Chairman of Senate’s Standing Committee of Education, Scientific and Technological Research.
