Can someone please help me translate the following:
The first three are quantities in urdu but I cant figure out how much they translate into in pounds/kilos

Sair or Seer (pronounced say-er or Seer) I dont know what the exact pronounciation is…
Pao
Chataank
Tolaa

Foods: I need to know what the following are called in english:
Rai (Ra-ee)
Safaid Zeera

Re: urdu connoisseurs...please help with cooking related terms

RAI is mustard seeds and safaid zeera is cumin seeds.

Re: urdu connoisseurs...please help with cooking related terms

i think pao is 250gr

Re: urdu connoisseurs...please help with cooking related terms

and one seer is 4 pao then 1kg

Re: urdu connoisseurs...please help with cooking related terms

Sair or Seer (pronounced say-er or Seer) I dont know what the exact pronounciation is... two pounds or one kilogram (aprox)
Pao ( half pound/250 gram)
Chataank (half ounce)
Tolaa = 11 gram

Foods: I need to know what the following are called in english:
Rai (Ra-ee) = Black mustared seed , there are two kinds of mustard seeds too. Black and yellow , they are not interchangeable in recipies. If one is substituted for the other then you will not get the right aroma and taste in the dish you are making.
Safaid Zeera = White cumin seed , there are black cumin seeds too the both taste , smell and look different and should not be substituted for preparing food as it will will not produce the desired taste and aroma in the dish you are making.

I hope it helps.

Re: urdu connoisseurs...please help with cooking related terms

I always call it "Jeera" :S and I didn't know it existed in white.

Re: urdu connoisseurs...please help with cooking related terms

^ Zeera :-)

Re: urdu connoisseurs...please help with cooking related terms

you find it in every desi store

Thanks for the complements. I like researching things. Just a little research on the Internet provided all the information about those weights and measures.
I come from a family of gourmet lovers that is why I know a lot about foods and spices.

All desi stores have both kinds of zeera. It is zeera for Urdu speakers and Jeera for Hindi speakers.

Here you go:

 1 Tola = 12 Masha or 11.67 gram
 1 Masha = 8 Ratti or 0.97 gram
