Re: urdu connoisseurs...please help with cooking related terms
Sair or Seer (pronounced say-er or Seer) I dont know what the exact pronounciation is... two pounds or one kilogram (aprox)
Pao ( half pound/250 gram)
Chataank (half ounce)
Tolaa = 11 gram
Foods: I need to know what the following are called in english:
Rai (Ra-ee) = Black mustared seed , there are two kinds of mustard seeds too. Black and yellow , they are not interchangeable in recipies. If one is substituted for the other then you will not get the right aroma and taste in the dish you are making.
Safaid Zeera = White cumin seed , there are black cumin seeds too the both taste , smell and look different and should not be substituted for preparing food as it will will not produce the desired taste and aroma in the dish you are making.
wow mirch you knew all the terms. chatank is also a handful, isn't it?
Thanks for the complements. I like researching things. Just a little research on the Internet provided all the information about those weights and measures.
I come from a family of gourmet lovers that is why I know a lot about foods and spices.
whoa thanks Mirch (also lovely4 and chips6)
where in the world can we find white cumin?
All desi stores have both kinds of zeera. It is zeera for Urdu speakers and Jeera for Hindi speakers.
