Urban farming! Do you do it?

Hi everybody!

So, the most recent trend seems to be the keen interest of many urban folks with enough space to spare to keep pets that have dual purpose and benefits. I have personally seen many suburban and city residing families adopting to the lifestyle of keeping chickens.

Some of the obvious benefits are ofcourse that you get free organic eggs, and i suppose they keep your lawn in check and serve as “pest control”.

Second theme that I’ve seen, and have seen it booming recently is urban farming. Where people are utilizing their green/soil spaces more efficiently by planting vegetables that are easily manageable and provide as a good source of your everyday food needs. The plus side of this is that it gives you something healthy to do with your free time, and drastically cuts down on costs of food. Which, based on your perspective might have added benefits (food is not “processed” and you are growing your own food).

So, this is the question I have for my fellow Gupians: Do you do anything of this nature? Would you say it’s worth the effort and proves healthier in the long run versus purchasing your food?

PS: I hope I have posted this in the appropriate section.

Re: Urban farming! Do you do it?

when we were in Pakistan we had lots of chickens and kukars (roosters) in our house, and i think (will confirm it with my mother) that no grass natuarlly grow once chicken pulls out the grass root.

In pakistan, my family (paternal side) had kept muj, kukars, bakrian. we used to have chickens-roosters, and ducks but then we also had a big lot-sehan (backyard), and there i am talking moderate climate city like karachi. otherwise its really hard to keep them in an extreme conditions such as of north america.
besides, not only they make a lot mess but also they also caught diseases pretty easily.

whether its gardening or having a small poultry farm, everything requires constant dedication and patience, and mom Alhumdullah treat everything, whether its a mint-tomatoes-parsley-cucumber-pepper,etc or chickens like her baby. that is why she mashaALLAH say get a really good result.

ps. kukriz here are so healthy that i doubt we can get the pure desi murghi and then keep em in our house. anyho, i was never a fan of desi murghi.

Re: Urban farming! Do you do it?

My HOA will not allow chicken farming but I do grow some vegetables every spring and summer. Nothing in winter , it is very inconvenient to be outdoor during winter.

Re: Urban farming! Do you do it?

I have a few cows and many many hens.

Re: Urban farming! Do you do it?

I have chickens and grow many vegetables in Summer... Beans, Cucumbers, Tommatoes...etc

When I get more money i'll buy a few goats and definately by next Summer i'll purchase a we Filly or two I've always loved horses and ponies and we have a lot of land near our home in fact theres a meadow all to ourselves across the road and the farmers are all very friendly round here.

It's the old kingdom of Mercia and offers some of the finest farmland in all England.

I dont miss my old town home anymore... the village house is smaller but I can always extend it if I need to.

Re: Urban farming! Do you do it?

I think it would be nice to have vegetable patch considering the rising costs of consumables here , it would prove noy only healthy but cost effective :hmmm:

As far keeping livestock , one needs more space and someone to manage it , probably wiser to do something like that if your living in the country though I’ve seen a lot of people do keep some kind of livestock if they have the space especially chickens.

Earlier , we used to have a garden with fruit trees , oranges , mangoes , raspberry and banana trees…and a small vegetable patch.
Now we’ve moved and have Fig tree and lemon trees and it proves beneficial, since its something commonly needed and I always find it amusing whenever I want lemons the houseboy goes lemme go get some from the garden .
