upset sleep cycle

helpppp!

the kid was sleeping from 9 to 9 until last week. then he started waking up twice a night for milk. last night, he was up three times! i’ve been up since 5 and i’m so tired and i have no idea what to do. my MIL suggested not giving him milk because then he might get into a habit but to offer water or caraway seed*** tea instead.

he’s been teething but nothing major- just lots of drool and chomping on things. he’s not a fussy teether Alhamdulillah- they just sort of show up after a few days of drooling and he’s fine, so i don’t think thats it.

could it be a growth spurt?

he was also napping for an hour/hour and a half twice a day but now he’s down to one nap in the mornings for about an hour only. i thought kids dropped naps later on, like around toddler stage? he’s 9.5 months old.

***is caraway sufaid zeera or kala zeera?

Re: upset sleep cycle

mines has also dropped a sleep during day time, now only sleeps one time and as you know ours are of the same age.

as for night, she gets up 2-3 times for a feed, has been happening from birth, but then I am breastfeeding so cannot compare.
As for giving only water, do try it first, u will see if the need for milk is there or not.

Re: upset sleep cycle

Since he takes the pacifier, try giving that to him..if he just needs to suck,he will take it but if he is hungry he will spit it out n ask for milk.

For some reasons I m not comfortable with giving water in bottle.. They expect milk in bottle so thats what it should be..but again its my own personal opinion for now..it may change later :D

What does he eat before going to bed? Milk? Or solids? Try exchanging with whatever you are giving now!

If all fails..growth spurt it is :) give it cowpoke of more days and then call the doc!

Re: upset sleep cycle

Cowpoke is couple!!!

Re: upset sleep cycle

hey i had the same trauma when my baby was of same age n i posted here also n everyone said it happens bc after 8 to 9 months babies r learning ne things n sometimes they practice it at night during sleep also n honestly dont cut his milk 2 time r fne till 1 year u know the amount he has to take in 24 hrs just keep tht in mind my baby is 15 months she is still taking 2 bottles at night

she herself got back to her routine after few weeks

all the best i know it very tiring

Re: upset sleep cycle

hahaha gtg, that typo made me giggle :D

he's eating solids about two hours before bed. he goes to bed with a bottle. the paci is always with him, so its not that which he's missing because other times he'll wake up and pop it in his mouth and fall back asleep.
he already drinks water and diluted juice out of the bottle so yeah, there goes that lol. we tried the sippy cup but he ends up playing with it instead of drinking from it.

da, you might be right... he just started to stand up on his own. maybe thats it?

Re: upset sleep cycle

actually SGC when i asked my doc she said babies r learning to crawl n walk n they practice it in their sleep as well n when they r unsuccessful they becomne frustrated n starts crying just make sure he is bit tired before sleep make sure he is having physical activity befor sleep in this way he l b tired n vl sleep more peacefully u have to b patient mine was same n she herself settled after 2 to 3 weeks

Re: upset sleep cycle

Devi is right...

Does he drink a proper bottle each time he wakes up? If its less than a normal fees...he aint hungry.

Aariz did this and i started to feed him oatmeal an hour before bed and however much milk he wanted at bedtime. It filled him up so very well! Befoe that... Jesus i was up eery few hours! This sortedit...funny....he would have veggies with couscous etc but that wasnt as filling as oatmeal made in milk....this he had every night until he was 20 months. Yes! Poor kid indeed! I would change the grains but still...it was the top solid forus!

Re: upset sleep cycle

^ i give him a pretty big meal of chicken and veggies around 5 and then oatmeal later but lately he's also shifted his milk drinking routine so a lot of times he's just getting the big meal around 7 instead of 5 and then a bottle at 8:30 before he sleeps. he doesn't usually drink the whole bottle, no... its usually 2-4 oz.
i guess i should give him his lunch sooner then- around 4 maybe- so he can have his oatmeal at 7. or did you do it back to back? i feel like the oatmeal needs some time to digest a bit before he lies down.

Re: upset sleep cycle

i used to gave vanilla custard after tht bathing n thn bottle n i made sure she finishes her bottle almost 7 ounces n it was almost half hour gap bw food n milk n u might not be sure whether its hunger or something else

Re: upset sleep cycle

How did you figure out he wakes up for milk..??..I mean does he not go back to sleep until you give him the bottle? My daughter was about the same age when we got back from out 2 month long trip to Pakistan and that was the time her sleep cycle went berserk.
Her pediatrician thought I should make her fall sleep without any bottles or atleast I should try.She thought that since she used to sleep through the night so there should be no reason for her to wake up twice a night and me giving her milk at that time was just helping her develop a bad habit....more so a comforting habit.
My mom thought otherwise. She thought I should give her milk because she is just a 10 mo old kid and also because ammi gave it to me (:D).
It was around this time I introduced cereal in her bottle.I am not sure how right that it is,but it worked. She was full enough to sleep through the night.I just stopped doing that a few months ago.She is 2 now.It is time to say bye to the bottle.

Try to adjust his meals in a way that you know he is full enough to sleep through the night. And even if he is waking up,try he can go back to sleep without a bottle. If he takes a pacifier, try that.

Did he have sth new to eat...which might be causing tummy issues ...??

Lets hope it is a phase and iA will settle in a few days.

Re: upset sleep cycle

If he is just drinking 2-4 oz...he is not hungry. Midget would drink a full bottle when he did get up...

It most probaby is a phase... He just learned to get up... Probably excited bout that!

Give it a week or 2...if the problem persits.. Talk to his dr i guess...

Hate it when a perfectly good routine gets nocked down... Hang in there!

Re: upset sleep cycle

At this age, if your son wakes up at night don't offer him milk if he's eating and drinking fine during the day. Just try to put him back to sleep. This is what my son's pediatrician recommended when he was waking up at night. At this age a lot of babies wake up from night terror or teething but it's important for parents to help them go back to sleep to maintain healthy sleeping habits and they don't need extra milk as they get most of nutrition from solids!

Re: upset sleep cycle

SGC thanks for starting this thread my one was sleeping all through the night from 6 weeks but now at 7 months he has starting waking up 2/3 times...I had it down to a growth spurt too...it is sooo tiring...until you figure out what it is I guess hubby has to do a shift or two.. ;)

Re: upset sleep cycle

Nothing wrong with drinking water out of a bottle, seen a lots of gorahs doing this.

but have you tried a regular plastic cup, my daughter is already drinking water from a normal cup mA. Its so funny while eating, if anything a bit spicy like rice, she sticks out her tongue and I know its time to give her water. She can also drink from a bottle, the ones with the small opening, mostly used by bikers.

Re: upset sleep cycle

^ yeah he likes to drink out of water bottles when we're sipping but i think its cos he likes sticking his tongue into the bottle opening and messing around with the water lol. i guess i should get into the habit of giving him water in his cup more often, eh.

chips, CA, he doesn't go back to sleep unless he has the bottle. there's a lot of fussing which escalates to all-out crying, and a lot of times he wakes up with this paci in his mouth so that's out as a comfort solution lol. mind you, 1 out of the 3 times, usually the first feed, he does take the whole bottle. its the second and third ones that are usually 3:30 and 5:30 where he only drinks a little bit. the consequence of today's 5 am wakeup call was that he had a 3 hour nap right alongside mama who napped for 2 hours. oh well, at least i feel human now!

sparrow, i HOPE its a phase too!

khawa, its very tiring having the routine knocked up, that's for sure. and yes, i'm hoping that its a brief phase because his brain is too excited about crawling and pulling himself up.

Re: upset sleep cycle

SGC i think he is just learning new things he l b fne wthing 2 weeks u have to be patent i was in the same scenerio i ddint changed anything from my baby's routing n she herself was bck to routine when all her excitment finished :D

Re: upset sleep cycle

It's been so long...I have forgotten :(

Re: upset sleep cycle

Eait till he learns to walk...dear jesus midget wanted to sleep walk in his crib!!!! That was a torturpus 2 weeks...i remember and shudder still! Thankfully genie isnt as keen as her older bro...phew!

Re: upset sleep cycle

yes it must be due to all the crawling around, she wakes up during the early hours of the morning and wants to play, pulls my hair or pats my face .. I am so dead at that time of the morning but madam is all ready and in play mood. so cute that i cannot resist giving her kisses and she chuckles with enjoyment. silly baby... :-)
