The whole Jat village of Balla in India, a couple of hours drive from the national capital of New Delhi, is proud of the “honour killing” of a young couple.

It was a ghastly killing. 21-year-old Sunitha who was three weeks pregnant and her 22-year-old husband Jasbir Singh were strangled to death recently.

Their bodies, half-stripped, were laid out on the dirt outside Sunita’s father’s house for all to see, a sign that the family’s “honor” had been restored by her cold-blooded murder.

A week later the entire village stands united behind the act, proud, defiant almost to a man, writes a horrified Simon Denyer of Reuters.

Among the Jat caste of the conservative northern state of Haryana, it is taboo for a man and woman of the same village to marry. Although the couple were not related, they were seen in this deeply traditional society as brother and sister.

“From society’s point of view, this is a very good thing,” said 62-year-old farmer Balwan Arya, sitting smoking a hookah in the shade of a tree in a square with other elders from the village council or panchayat. “We have removed the blot.”

Growing economic opportunities for young people and lower castes in Haryana have made “love marriages” more common, experts say, and the violent repression of them has risen in tandem as upper caste Jat men fight to hold on to power, status and property.

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you Mr. Caste Honor. Straight out of the Dark Ages, Mr. Caste Honor has killed an innocent couple for not wanting to honor the caste.

P.S. The title is what it is because World Affairs is where we can esHpeak loud and clear bout great paradise, the land of milk and honey.

Both of the victims were from the Jat caste as well.

Jats in Haryana and Punjab have a strict code of marriage:

1- Same Caste
2- People of the same village can't marry each other (considered family).
3- They can't be of the same sub-caste(got)
4- The guys' last name (got) cannot be the same be the same as the girls last name.
5- The guy's mothers last name (got) before marriage and grandmothers last name before marriage cannot be the same as the girl.

These marriage rules are common in North India and the penalty for defying this is a Honor Killing.

Most Jats are Hindus. They live in Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Western U.P.

Then come Muslim Jats. They live mostly in Pakistan but some are found in above Indian states as well.

Then come Sikh Jats. They live mostly in Punjab and some in Haryana.
Most Sikhs are Jats.

There are also some Christian Jats also.

And Yes, the Caste System is very strong among Sikhs when it comes to marriage(but not as strong as in Hinduism).
And Honor Killings are pretty common in Punjab villages.

Honor killing is just a rubbish claim, there is nothing like that. These are some lone incidents.

Regarding Jats:

In Haryana, they are called “Jaats” and in Punjab there are “Jats”.
And there are significant amount of “Jat Muslims” in Pakistan as well which are not different then India’s Jat.

Yes, I lived in Punjab for a long time. I'm not denying it completely, like i said they are lone incidents and i can name all those incident if you want. Punjabies are one of the most forwarded and open minded peoples (intercast marriages between Hindus and Sikhs are very common) mainly because most of the Punjabies are settled abroad. In Punjab earlier, the older brother used to keep hairs (Pugs) and his younger brother used to be clean shaven.

The custom of older brother being Sikh was found only among the Khatri/Arora community and that is why these Sikhs are the only ones that marry hindus.

It is extremely rare for Sikhs (other than Khatri/Bhappas) to marry hindus.

Whatever but Punjab has the most skewed sex ratio in the whole nation. If that is progress then I want India to be underdeveloped full time.

Yes male female sex ratio is a cause of concern if we go by census department and i think may be the census department don't have ballpark correct figure. The place where i live from here alone every year number of immigration to countries like US, UK, Canada and Australia stands around 10K, mainly students rest include worker from Truck driver to IT pro...doctor. And this drain of people going on like forever. So may be this reason contribute to incorrect male/female ratio.

All the religions in india have casts.

In a different way every region of the world has casts. same stuff different face..

but still that doesnt justify the heinous act done by the villagers. I hope the the culprits will be brought to justice.

It is terrible, no doubt. And surprisingly, it awes us each time it happens, yet it continues to happen in different parts of the world. Indian Sub-continent (Pakistan/India) specifically…

Only education and broad mindedness can help these folks who out of rage, etc. commit such acts under the veil of “Honor Killing”.
