I need to setup an online repository and a document submission workflow such that people who submit documents cannot see the other documents in the repository. I need the submission process to be simple - can’t do ftp type stuff due to the type of end-users I’m catering to.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I’ve looked into setting up shared workspaces using Office Live, Google Docs etc., but these spaces require invites, and allow invited users to see files in the shared space - which is not what I want.
after submitting, i dunno what your needs are. in my case, the submissions goto another directory and just sit .. (i login via ftp and grab them).
more like i have that ftp location mapped locally as like a Z: drive

few factors im not sure/havent tested:
what happens if two people try upping same filename.
filesize limit (i cant remember if there was/wasnt in original script).
what if you try upping the same document, again (filename/version issue).
unless person name their file, submission-by-confused.doc u dont have a way of identifying.
which opens another possibility of someone who ISNT me, uploading submission-by-confused.doc and causing ME to setup for fail(ure).
idea behind this script was simplest form of submission for gupshup when uploading facility was down. ppl had to upload, drop me a pm with their filename.
directory where these submissions go is setup with “Option -index” so even if submission directory is known, server wouldnt show its listing without being in ftp
^^ i just checked uploadthingy , idea is pretty nice. . watching their intro video i noticed that there is a 1gb monthly limit.. im not sure how space-extensive ur document flow would be versus amount of ppl uploading to you. .
also, sensitivity of those documents might require security stuff as well.. do keep us posted :k:
yeah, the free account has a limit, but I’m okay with a small account - 5GB of transfers/month and 9/month is okayish for the subscription.
They also offer SSL encryption for an additional 9/month but I don’t require it at this time.
I like it because it’s scalable for multiple file uploads (up to 15 files), and also allows custom forms for uploads. Also, the sender gets a reference number after submission to track their files / correspond with receiver if needed.
It’s a pretty simple idea actually, and I can prolly write this app and run the server myself if I had the time, but unfortunately I don’t. I don’t know why no one else has thought of this yet - it has potential in scenarios such as document workflows for bids / RFQs etc.
^ I know man... FTP just has this perceptual barrier for many end-users... otherwise, it's so easy for me to setup a filezilla server with appropriate directory permissions to accomplish what I'm trying to do.
1 . File uploading system
2 . One XML file with IP, File Name, Password & Sharing Status (Private , Public)
Just upload the file and store attributes in XML . When someone browse the files , only show the list of files that are public or with given password or same IP .
^ I know yaar - it's just that I need a turnkey solution to recommend to various people in my org who manage projects, and I don't want to be the point contact for any problems they face. If it were just me, then I'd prolly find a couple of hours to write this myself.
Namaan, why don't u write it for us. Let's see how you fare out.
I was actually looking for something like this for someone and haven't been able to find it.
Tofi - seriously though uploadthingy.com is pretty good, and I'm impressed by this guy's (Chris) other apps like projectthingy.com and flowthingy.com for projects and workflows. Pretty simple stuff, but very hard to find outside a full application suite or solution with a relatively hefty cost.
That being said, if Namaan develops an app, I'd much rather use that - and I'll match what I'm paying at uploadthingy.com :)
I have a client which is a printing company and they have clients who upload their graphics and other files to the server which they have to constantly clean up. I tried getting UI developed using php upload but it keeps getting stuck at 50 mb even tho i have modded the settings. FTP ofcourse is an option but not practical (as confused pointed out) for the varied categories of clients. I'll check out the uploadthingy. Lets see how it works out.

Tofi what you mean it gets stuck ? you mean while uploading it has a limitation of max file size ? This is a server issue . You have to edit php.ini and increase the upload file size and include it in php script folder .

That's what I meant when I said I modified the settings! :)
