But Vista will be 64-bit. How would you run it on your current x86 architecture? You will need a new one anyway. I think you should upgrade your current one to 1.5GB, you will need two chips of equal size and the best price you will get is for two 512 chip. Keep this lappy for next 3 years, this can act as a server later on.
My laptop's a 2.4 ghz P4. Is it worth simply upgrading the RAM to 1 gb minimum or should I get another one (not right away)?
Oh and I have no problem with my current RAM. Just that I heard how Windows Vista would require at least 512 MB RAM.
First question you should ask yourself that, what are your requirements? if you are a gamer, web designer, animator...etc then you surely need the extra ram. if you watch some movies, play songs, surfing, and ofcourse hanging out on GS then I think you are fine, as for ram showing 480 that means you have integrated graphics, you can check that in My computer (properties). and get a program such as MemFree, maybe that will help and remove some programs from your startup.
as for thinking about getting another laptop, if you are not in hurry (job.requ/ gamer...etc) then I think you should wait coz by Sep 06 (somewhere around that quarter) Intel plan to release 64 bit chips. I would recommend wait
and Windows Vista, I was reading on the cnet they said there will 6 versions something similar on the line of Home xp, pro xp...etc seprating gamers/ from home users and cooperate world. and they will release i think the last quarter and since there are not alot of drivers for 64-bit regardless of laptop manufacturer's, the complete transformation will take alot of time, perhaps 2007 and we all know the new thing out in Tech is an old news after a week.
so bottom line is if there is no hurry then just be patient and wait .
^ yes - by then the price for dual cores IBOOKS powered by intel chipset will be cheap. Then you can get one of those instead of running Windows Vista.
