I need to share my happiness somewhere!!
Three trilogies that I’ve read are coming to an end soon.
The first is the one I’m most excited about. This book was on sale in the kindle shop and it looked short and interesting enough so I bought it for 2.99 while I was sitting outside my 2’ yrs old’s bedroom waiting for him to fall asleep. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. What a fantastic book. Underlying themes like racism/cross cultural breeding the author’s imagination knows no bounds. She really tests our cultural/society’s stereotypes. What a story to tell! Angels/ Monsters/Demons / prior lives / soul gleenings OMG I was hooked. She writes rather somber and a little dry but the story telling is so pungent that you stick through the whole book and are actually sad to see it end. You find yourself rooting for the unlikeliest characters.
#1 Daughter of Smoke and Bone
#2 Days of Blood and Starlight
#3 Dreams of Gods and Monster (current read)
The next trilogy ending is the Lev Grossman’s The Magicians. Think of this as an adult version of Narnia needs a part of Harry Potter. Its cruder, the characters are darker. Underlying themes question the limitations of physics and are always atheist. Or I feel like they are. We see rapists Gods in the shapes of animals often injured and fairly easy for humans to find.
Good / bad blurred and relationships always asking for sacrifices. Overall, a good series to read. Plants uncommon ideas in your mind.
#1 The Magicians
#2 The Magician Kings
#3 The Magicians Land ( release date in Aug)
And finally, the least favorite of the bunch Deborah Harkness’ A Discovery of Witches. This book was recommended to me and I was drawn to it because it was about vampires. My very guilty pleasure. Sadly, I didn’t fall in love with the vampire in the book or the female lead or anyone for that matter. I think I just read this book to finish it; and read the 2nd book thinking something good has to come out of it.
The author has thoroughly managed to suck all the excitement and every fantastic/larger then life element out of the lives of Vampires and witches. She tries hard to create a bad boy but all she manages is a rich/ tastefull/ uncle of a vampire. The historical elements are interesting to read; but also emphasize the weakness of the all powerful vampire.
Heres to hoping the 3rd and final installments redeems itself. (NOT)
