Islamabad, 2 Jan. (AKI) - Pakistani security forces have killed up to 25 Islamist militants in armed clashes in the tribal region of South Waziristan, on the border with Afghanistan.

The latest clashes began after four paramilitary soldiers had been kidnapped in the area on Tuesday. Tribal elders were trying to negotiate for the release of the troops.
The clash took place in the area controlled by the Mehsud tribe, three days after the government had directly implicated the leader of the recently-formed Tehreek Taliban Pakistan (or the Pakistani Taliban), Baitullah Mehsud, in the assassination of former prime minister and opposition leader, Benazir Bhutto.
A spokesperson for Baitullah Mehsud has denied any involvement in Bhutto’s murder.
