This is mostly a Sylheti Bengali thing in the UK.. ‘Khanom’ is another popular one but outside their particular community it’s far less common nowadays.. My Mum’s family’s from Dhaka and none of my female cousins or friends use those anymore.. ‘Begum’ was traditionally used in front of a name by Turks.. don’t know how it ended up being tacked onto the wrong end lol..

I know two girls from uni , they had surname as begum. I also know someone who has Khanom name but didn’t know it is a Bangoli thing. Wow turks had begum name , that’s interesting and I thought Khanom is for Khan /Pathan people.
