Unusual names for desi kids..

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

Bazooka :DDon't worry RV, that wasn't the idea.. The siblings of Mashfooka have equally unusual names which I can't even remember.. but they sound sort of similar..

Would it be weird to use 'Bella' as a middle name for a desi (mixed) child? Inbetween a Muslim first name (Aliyah, Ayesha, something like that) and surname..

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

I heard that name a lot in Iran.. slightly different spelling though..

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

Not sure what the name means, but it is the name of a Sahabi, who is known to have been given 'ghusl' by the angels after achieving martyrdom.

This reminds me a cousin of my mother's has four daughters. Two she named Hanzala and Huzaifa, which I found odd, because both are male names. I figured she must have phonetically chosen the names, as those ending with 'ah' at end are usually female names in Arabic...

Unusual names for desi kids..

Hanzala is a name of a sahabi, and I've heard it quite often amongst Libyans

I have the strangest names in my extended family, shezieba, baraham, tibna, muntaha

One of my employees is Iranian and is called Fereshteh (Farishta)

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

well, yeah. I didn't know that when i heard it for the first time. He is the only person in my circle/extended circle who has this name and the funny part was tat he didnt even know his name meaning.

This reminds me of a girl whose name was "Kimiya" ... it might be a cultural name for an iranian but whenever i saw her, all i could picture is chemistry lab (In urdu, chemistry word is derived from persian word kimiya)

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

I like the sound of Ayesha Bella more than Aliyah Bella...the former combo of names just flows into each more smoothly imo. I don't think it's weird because Bella doesn't have a bad meaning ...so I don't think there'd be an objection. But that's just a guess. I like it spelled as Aysha though. Never cared for the "e" in the name. I also like the Turkish version of it: Ayse.

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

I knew a girl in college named Farishta (spelled differently), she was afghani.

I used to think Jannat was an unusual name as a kid but I've come across more than a few.

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

This begum name , usually Bangoli girls have it with their names, most of them have begum as a sirname.

Jayba Begum
Shamima Begum
Falan Begum

Ins-e-yazdan

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

This is mostly a Sylheti Bengali thing in the UK.. 'Khanom' is another popular one but outside their particular community it's far less common nowadays.. My Mum's family's from Dhaka and none of my female cousins or friends use those anymore.. 'Begum' was traditionally used in front of a name by Turks.. don't know how it ended up being tacked onto the wrong end lol..

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

Yeah.. I think Aysha Isabelle, Aliyah Isabelle or even Arya Isabelle flow better and sound a little more formal than simply Bella so those are the new considerations.. Ayşe is lovely (though I'm not a fan of Turksh names in general, many sound a little 'blunt' to me) but English people would never get their heads around the fact it's 'Aysha' without an 'sh' in there for them to see.. I sometimes wonder what happens to all the Ayşes who end up coming to live in England, do they end up changing the spelling or go thru life just being called 'Ace' or 'Ice'..

Also, can you give two siblings the same middle name? Is that weird?

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

I didn't know sibling had to have different middle names. My sister and I have the same middle name. Heck we used to share our middle name with our dad until he changed his.

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

^Ahh.. it sounds like a sweet idea.. I hadn't come across it so wasn't sure..

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

Nope, not weird. My mom and khala share same middle name. I have two other khalas that share same middle name.

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

Shmoyel..

Did it come from Ismael?

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

I know two girls from uni , they had surname as begum. I also know someone who has Khanom name but didn't know it is a Bangoli thing. Wow turks had begum name , that's interesting and I thought Khanom is for Khan /Pathan people.

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

Zukhruf.....is my cousin's 4 year old daughter. Zukhruf has an elder sister, Mahoor.

Re: Unusual names for desi kids..

Wait, deeba are you expecting?? I love Isabelle as a middle name and I'm partial to Aaliya as a first. Aaliya Isabelle is gorgeous. My little girl is Aaliyah Claire :)

I know desi sibs named Maya, Aidan and Nora. Not unusual on their own but definitely unusual for fully Pakistani kids IMHO.
