I was reading an article in National Geographic yesterday. The issue is from jun,jul or feb of 2003. I took pic’s of the pic in the magazine. The stroy was about Untouchables (shoodras) in India. It was a sad stroy. The issue of untouchables surrounds Pakistanis as well. We may not call them shoodras but we do engage in similar treatment to our naukars, sweepers etc.
Well, I know just two people from the dalit class frm Southern India. I had an opportunity to interact with them for over a month and believe me the stories they told of those untouchables are so horrific , the type of work they do and the treatment meted out to them is just so inhuman.
Well yes we in Pakistan must also pay heed to their plight
(the naukars, sweepers) but the situation isn’t that bad and they are treated fairly well, believe me. Though couple of monthsback there was an advertisment in the news paper which specifically mentioned that people from so and so class (I guess there was mention of one of the minority groups) should apply for the job of a sweeper and the christians working with us didn’t really approve of it. I guess they protested later…I believe it did hurt the sentiments of many people. So, yes we should also be careful magar Pakistan main halaat bohat behtar hain.
Here is an interesting anaecdote that tells a little bit about the psyche of humanbeings or lets say of the upper class brahmins.
