I should have known from the way my mom was looking at me.
‘Aisha!’ she exclaimed ‘you better get ready or you will miss the bus’
‘Jeez mom’ I said. ‘Will you let me sleep, please?’ I begged her, pleading to her with my eyes.
‘No you must go to school otherwise you will just sleep the whole day and do nothing else’
‘Oh alright if you say so’ I said to her.
I casually got out of bed and started getting ready for school. The bus was supposed to come at 7 o clock and it was 6 50 am. I had 10 minutes to wear my clothes, abaya and sheila, brush my hair and teeth, eat my breakfast and then gather my stuff and wait for the bus to come. I made such a fuss getting ready and during the whole time my mom was shouting at me and even my dad got up. I am not usually like this because I don’t wake up late always, but yesterday me and my cousin went and had dinner and we came back quite late. I mean really late like 12 30 in the night because I had left something at his house and we went all the way from Mall of the Emirates to Sharjah and back. It’s quite silly actually but it was my feather pillow that I had taken with me to their house when I was living there because my bedroom and bathroom were being modified. While getting ready I noticed that my brother was not getting ready for school. So I went up to him and asked him the reason of him not going to school.
‘Oh man, I am not feeling that well’ he said in a low voice ‘I cannot go to school’
‘Whatever’ I said. ‘Are you going to give the same excuse to mom?’ I asked him.
‘Yeah because I am genuinely sick’ He said ‘What do you think I am trying to bunk school or what?’
‘Ok bro do whatever you want I got to go downstairs as the bus is about to come’
‘Yeah you do that’
I left my brother’s room, grabbed my bag and went downstairs. I opened the door leading into the garage and saw that the bus was already there. Shunny and Raneem said something from the bus window but I didn’t quite get it. I quickly got my bag and climbed up into the bus. The problem with the school bus that comes to Arabian Ranches is that it is quite high so you literally climb the steps to get into the bus and sit in your seat. As I walked up to my seat I saw that some newcomer had sat in it. I automatically got angry. I didn’t know who he but he was a newcomer and even then that didn’t give him an excuse to occupy my seat.
‘Excuse me this is my row that you are sitting in’ I tried to calm myself.
‘Your name is not written on it’ he said this to me while smiling.
Oh the nerve of this guy.
‘But I always sit in this row and today also I am going to sit in this row.’
‘Yes you are there is a free seat beside me in this row’ he was smiling at me again ‘I will move my bag and you can sit here with me’
I couldn’t believe what was happening, was this guy flirting with me? I pondered over this and whether I should sit beside him or not. Al the time while I was thinking he was looking at me. Finally, because the bus was moving and I was going to fall like two times I decided that I should sit with this guy to annoy him, at the very least. So hesitatingly I sat with him, I looked back at Shunny and Raneem who, like always sit together and asked them what they were trying to say to me before.
‘Aisha baji, do you know that girl called me a ***** again this morning before we came to your house’ Shunny told me this and I was quite shocked.
‘What! How dare she? Shehnaz did you do something to annoy her?’ I inquired.
‘Nothing at all, she was annoying Maheen and I told her to stop it that’s all!’
‘Just tell your sister to stay away from Fatima, I don’t like that girl and I cant believe the audacity of her to say ***** to you. For god’s sake she is just in grade 3, she cant just go around saying people ***** and later when asked why you said it or do you know what it means she does not even know the meaning of the word.’ I knew that Shunny was impressed from my small little speech I made just now and I continued ‘So Shehnaz you avoid that girl from now on, alright?’
‘Yeah sure Aisha baji, I will do that.’ she said it and moved her attention to her sister who I was sure was going to get a good lecture now.
While I was thinking about the lecture I thought someone was saying something to me so I straightened myself and looked towards the front, the guy next to me was saying something to me it seemed to me like he was trying to strike up a conversation with me so I asked him what he wanted.
“Nothing I was just saying that I agree with you on the whole ***** word matter, small children shouldn’t just go around saying this stuff to other people”
Without looking at him I said
“Adults also shouldn’t say these words to other people” There I said it I had hoped this would annoy the guy but he gave his signature smile and said
“Yes but adults are helpless they get used to such words and then try to kick the habit but can’t, children on the other hand can be stopped while they are young and taught about the error of their ways”
Oh I hate this because he is right I thought.
“Yes you are completely right. Now if you will excuse me I would like to listen to some music”
I was taking out my ipod from my backpack and trying to put its earphones into my ears when he asked
“You listen to music in the morning?”
“Yes unfortunately I feel quite bored in the bus and I get rid of this feeling by listening to some fast numbers”
