Unpaid bills of the guests - A Question

Not sure, where it goes..putting it here so that only serious replies please.

A guest visited from Pakistan and stayed at our place. Racked up hundreds of dollars worth of medical bills and gave our address. Paid most of them. After he left, a few bills came later on. I contacted the dude and he said he has no plans to come back to US, so I might as well forget about it. Since he didn’t have an SSN, so I doubt if the creditors can do anything serious.

Anyway, I contacted the creditor and told them that the person you are sending the bills to does not live at this address any more. They said they will have to investigate. Then, a few months later, after sending zillions of reminders, I received a letter from some credit collection company for the same bill. I called them up, and they said just to put this in writing (that I am not him, and the person doesn’t live at this address) and send a copy of the notice back to them.

Before I do that, just wanted to make sure what are my liabilities, if any, in this regard? I didn’t promise to pay this guys unpaid bills. Just because a guest stayed at my place for 2 weeks and gave my address, does it make me even remotely responsible for these unpaid bills?

Anyone with some insight? Thanks.

You are not reponsible for his actions.

you dont even have to call the credit agencies.. they dont go by addresses. ignore them after a while the junk mail will stop showing up.

Faisal: it depends if you were sponsoring his/her visit. If you sponsored than there is a limited liability to outstanding debtors.

No, I didn't sponsor the visit. He just stayed at my place, and gave my address when filling out all the forms at various doctors etc (I presume). I surely never signed any of the forms accepting any responsibility for unpaid bills.

We had encountered a similar problem, but it wasn't a guest who had unpaid bills, but someone who shared the same name as my father. At first we were very frustrated because they don't stop calling you or sending you mail, then my dad clearly told them off and finally they shut up.

In this situation, i don't think you are liable to even answer, let alone pay the guys bills. Just ignore it and they'll eventually stop.
