What flavour of Unix would you recommend? I have an extra HD and I was thinking about Linux or Sun OS since both are free… Its been a loooooong time since I worked with Unix!!! been out of touch and don’t know much… Please let me know why a certain flavour is better then the other.
Thanks
Re: Unix
I second that question :)
Re: Unix
For desktop, try FreeBSD.
Re: Unix
gentoo, freebsd, solaris.
Re: Unix
Umm .. Red HAt 9
Re: Unix
If you want easy desktop based Linux then use Mandrake, now Mandriva (not bad for server either), otherwise use Fedora Core 3. If you want hard time & challanging one then go for Slackware.
BSD (is the Unix not Linux) is good but not for desktop, though people dont mind it as desktop but I'd advise a web or FTP server as BSD (free or Open) I am not much fond off NetBSD.
Solaris on intel is not that great, I have been using Solaris 10 (Intel) for few months & now seriously thinking of replacing with some Linux flavour. I would choose Mandrake (Mandriva) so that my younger brother can learn some Linux/Unix too.
Red Hat 9 is old & unsupported. It doesn't have many drivers for new hardware, I'd recommend FC3 instead. RedHat 9 (Shrike) is definately a NO NO.
Re: Unix
If you really want to go for Solaris, get a Sparc based machines, used Ultra 5 are now available for Euro 50 per piece on auction sites.
Re: Unix
why not start with something that you have already worked on, I mean it might give you the taste of it and proly help u understand it better. Then go for something else. I would recommend Redhat or Suse, cuz i have worked on it. And its been a long time for me too, but if I would want to get into it again, the best thing would be to start from scratch. Upto you though :)
Re: Unix
the best distro out there with no doubt at all is Ubuntu. www.ubuntulinux.org
Re: Unix
solaris as mentioned is not very good on x86. Where it excels is on sparcs ofcourse and handling multipule cpu's. Have a good look at Gentoo. It please lazy idiots like me. Spend some time setting it up then chilling ever since with the portage system. I believe Debin has a simillar mechanism.
Re: Unix
Oye PD, pehle MySQL tho install karo na!!
Re: Unix
if it was upto me to decide your fate.. i would make u download the original linus trovalts (sp?) kernel that he wrote with two original unix’ kernels in mind.. and develop the operating system around that kernel personally.. it would fit under 10mb, would have ascii arts (no gui) and would be using 98% of a p2 (/w mmx set) horsepower, instantly putting EVERY windows ever build, to shame..
perhaps its better its not upto me ![]()

Re: Unix
I would say, if its your first time experimenting with Linux then play with Mandrake first and then move on to gentoo, red hat, freebsd etc later on.
Re: Unix
