If someone got a Bachelors Degree in CIS ( Computer information Systems ) … what are the career prospects? is this line of study considered a goldmine these days? or is overrated?
Their current experience is as UNIX/SANS administrator …
I need to gauge the career prospects of this qualification.
I can tell from my perspective .. any industry that deals heavily in CAD/CAM/CAE software rely very much in UNIX admins .. cause these software mainly run on UNIX and mainframe
Thanks TLK , mate i know nothing about technology , but i need to gauge someone’s future success … So in easy words , i need to know if the qualification I mentioned above is a hot shot thing or just an ordinary degree with below average job chances ?
CB... on the outset, a degree in CIS can be pretty generic unless coupled with a specialization and/or industry endorsed certifications along with several years of work experience. However, if someone has Unix based experience, that can prove quite useful in paving the way for a long-term career in IT.
Several questions before someone here might be able to offer more insights:
You said current experiences as Unix Admin. Q: How many years? and what type of computing environment... purely System Admin or Network Admin also? how big/small is the user base and network setup where the person has been working?
An affiliation with SANS is also good... but what's the context of affiliation? certification? membership? other?
Any industry based credentials such as Sun Solaris or IBM AIX certifications?
