I’m sick of Microsoft and wanted to be a convert.
I’m a bigginer to unix and wanted to get more into Unix based operating systems. Any hints, tips, Certs etc… advice would be kindly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Unix help please
Personal use , business use ? If business , how big is the business ? Where are you from USA, UK , Pakistan ?
Do you have certified , genuine version of Windows ?
Its more for personal use at the moment but I wouldn't mind keeping a piece of paper for future. From Pak but in New Zealand at the moment. I have done MCSE back in 2003 (Waste of money).
Re: Unix help please
For personal use Windows is ok, it is not the best OS in the world but going to Linux( kinda unix for PC's) is not good option. Becasue there are so many unitlities and applications available for Windows , that are not available for Linux.
Re: Unix help please
its not worth it man. unix is good as a concept, pretty buggy and temperamental and variably competant in practice.
Thanks Mirch, Im sick or Microsoft apps - have been using them for yonks so time for a change.
Ravage, I kinna know what Im getting into. So far I kinna like the feel of it.
Re: Unix help please
I've been Unix form last 13 yrs now .. and here is my sussgestion
Get Linux . . Unix is not free and its command based .. kind of like old DOS... its very involved .. Drivers and applications are not readily availaible ..
Even lots of big companies are moving away from Unix .. and getting into Windows .. but I suggest Linux ...
Re: Unix help please
Unix is great if you know what you are doing. If you can work in DOS you might like unix since its command based like TLK said. But give Ubuntu a try. It's an open source OS based on Linux.
I am running Ubuntu on lapy, been playing with Shell commands. What do you suggest, linux first and then work my way up.
Do you suggest any training material etc...
a1kashur, played with DOS quite abit back in the days. Qbasic days were great.
Re: Unix help please
DO linux first .. and do buy the guide for Unix .. see if you can digest that . .if you feel good about that .. go for it ..
Just get OS X . It works, stable and is UNIX.
Re: Unix help please
Unix is not for personal use. Start with Linux please & then u can start thinking about Unix.
Re: Unix help please
if you use your pc to do wordprocessing, youtubing or entertainment, then linux is a bad idea, may be apple, but definitly not linux. wifi is broken, sound is broken,
its good as a server and for research, and sometimes other things as well, but most of the time its a waste of time
Re: Unix help please
^ total rubbish. Maybe back in 1998 it was.
Explain why Acer, one of the biggest PC makers now ships Linux on one of it's notebooks; and looking to expand it's Linux offerings?
Najim: Thanks, its for personal use but prefer the unix touch. Im also sick of having to pay for compilers for windows

My Acer came with Ubuntu pre-installed on it. Its almost as good as windows GUI was if not better too and teh beauty is with a single command you can hear rock music and see the rainbows :)

Plus linux has very I mean very very advance scientific stuff you could play with.

AND if you decide to go with linux

Re: Unix help please
In terms of training, back in the days… late nineties/early 2k, I found the LPI training modules to be quite useful for a beginner in Linux.
I used to teach Sun Solaris Sys Admin and Net Admin on the Solaris 8 and 9 platforms and started teaching the LPI certification track in parallel to it. The LPIC levels I and II seem to cover most of the basics that anyone would need to know in order to get to a level where they can learn more on their own depending on their individual needs. I didn’t do level III so can’t say how useful / relevant that is.
