UMBC has an OK computer science department but if you really want the education for your money go with UMD College park. Their engineering school is probably the best in Maryland/DC/North Virginia area.

Unfortunate rishta stories.

yes College Park has to be the choice for CS programs with a theoretical focus.
I spent a sememster at JHU's Comp Sci dept. which is well known for its research orientation... a lot of students get to work with projects funded by the NSF and get to see their application in the real world. I worked on something that's being used by the US DOD. It was a fun time, but then again, dimagh kharab ho geya tha in just one semester.

I'm planinng to work while studying, is that possible and legal?

UMD College Park is about 20 minutes drive south of UMBC. It is far more reputable than UMBC and has a better academic program especially in CS. Usually those who are rejected by College Park end up going to UMBC.

Baltimore City is a 10 minute drive north of UMBC. As far as safety is concerned, if you stay within the main downtown business district during safe hours you should be ok. I would't recommend exploring beyond that point.

You will find a lot of desis around Baltimore area. Most of them are average FOBy and friendly (almost chipkoo) type people. If you go down to Howard County/Montgomery county area you will find many snobby, higher class people who tend to mingle within thier types. Good restaurant near Baltimore city is Shaheen and maybe to some extent Oh's place. Food Factory is another one...it is in College Park. Most good restaurants are in Northern Virginia area which are around 30-40 minute drive from UMBC...there is Ravi Kabab, Abshaar, O's Place (Chinese), and Kabab Palace.

do not agree, snobby pepz are all over Balto :snooty: Ali Howard county and montgomery county is the best place to live in Maryland. There is a very low crime rate there, (the only pepz hate those counties are the one who are intimidated by um) i love Howard county :slight_smile:

agree with Ahmedjee, UMD is the best college for CS + last time i checked University of Maryland was in the list of 10 best uni’s in US.

No sky pepz dont go to umbc who get rejected, pepz with the major of medicine attend UMBC. ( It was actually the hottest school in MD 2 yrs ago).

Disagree…most desis in this area are low-income so they cannot be snobby.

There are those who apply to UMBC as thier first choice and they go there. But I’m talking about those who apply to UMD as thier first choice and have to resort to UMBC when they get rejected. Academically speaking, there is no denying that UMD is considered better then UMBC, even in pre-med curriculum.

Trust me, i have been to balto county, and have met lots of desis there who are snobs. I m talking from experience here.

(pre) Welcome to Baltimore..one of the highest criminal cities of the U.S… because of all the kalayas (well goray too) anyway, i just want to alert you and do not want to scare you , it’s the reality… BUT there is other good stuff in baltimore too as others in this forum have mentioned…

Lots of Muslims, Pakistani, Indian here, Lots of mosques…the one I go to is Mosjid Rahman (mostly pakistani go there) I am sure you can make “good friends” there at the mosque. here is the musjid address: Islamic Society of Baltimore Masjid Al-Rahmah

I recommend you to join your MSA (Muslim Society Association) in The University of Maryland.

There are good and bad neighborhoods…it’s really confusing it’s like, example, zipcode 21227 is all goray to zipcode 21228 is all kalay (just an example)… I am sure if you go to the mosque, or the MSA at the univerisity, they can guide you …

good luck and best wishes for your studies…Stay away from people WHO WASTE TIME. If you want to be successful follow this (just an advise)
-Review material prior to class
-Review notes after class
-visit professor, advisors,tuitors for help
-study in small groups (3-5)several times per week
-Ask question, Ask question, Ask question
-Maketime to relax, and restore your energy.
(donot waste time by hanging around with the ones who are studying because they are forced to study, or who are wondering around and wasting their parents money)
