Re: Universe is finite or infinite?
Nobody is claiming anything, scientist. These are theories human brain can entertain and predict using geometry.
FYI, I did not post a link showing the shape of the earth. Did you even click on it?
The observable universe is flat and seems infinite. We can’t really say that about the unobservable universe. There could be parts of the universe where the density of matter is high causing it to curve. We cannot detect that curvature because we can’t reach around the universe. A 3-torus universe is finite without a boundary. I was only trying to answer your question as to why and how this is even possible.
Who told you if our universe is flat it must be infinite? Universe can be flat and closed. It just doesn’t seem that way because we are trapped in a very small part of the expanding universe. Read up on Closed Manifold. It may clear your confusion about the difference between local and global geometry of the universe.
I am not claiming that the universe is finite with a boundary. I am just telling you of other theories that exist explaining different possible shapes of the universe.
I found a really good link actually: https://my.vanderbilt.edu/stacyfonstad/files/2011/10/ShapeOfSpace.pdf
