Re: how good is it?

U of Alberta is known for its graduate programs more that its undergraduate ones. It's regarded as a premier research institution in the country especially when it comes to NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) related research. In terms of ratings, it is consistently in the top 10 Universities in Canada... you should check the MacLeans and the Times Educational ratings for the latest information (google for more)

Edmonton is one of the most economically developed and technologically connected cities in Canada right now... low taxes and a booming primary sector industry are key reasons. Bloody darn cold there though (northern continental climate).

Can't comment much on financial assistance since it varies by students etc.

thanks Umar bhai for the help

Umar bhai, can you comment on the housing situation in Edmonton? I have heard it's getting extremely crowded. I am considering U of A's pharmacy program (if I do get accepted), and I don't want to be sleeping on the streets if I'm unable to find a residence spot!

Re: Univ. of Alberta - how good is it?

i attended the engineeirng program at the U of A and have lived in edmonton all my life and also working here so I can provide a comment or two.

Firstly, cost of living is extremely high due to the 'oil boom' a 2000+ sq ft house will easily run you 500k+ and a decent house is ~600k. Vacancy as they just announced today, is at a 30 year low. Couple that with the fact that the provincial government introduced legislation to limit rent increases had an adverse effect as landlords have raised rents by as much as $1000 in some buildings. It is true that now "edmonton is one of the most economically developed cities in canada" but that statement is a bit mis-leading because it has been unable to cope with the boom and influx of new people. Infrastructure is crumbling literally just take a drive on the roads and see. The money is here but the growth is too fast to keep up.

If you are planning to attend the U of A i would highly recommend seeking accomodation on campus through the university. There are however tons of apartments and high rises in and around campus but I am not sure what the rent is there nowadays.

As for the U of A it is one of the largest universities in Canada and is world re-known for its research programs. The engineering program as a whole (including undergrad) is also very well respected. Muslim community here is also very good.

Re: Univ. of Alberta - how good is it?

Thanks a lot! I have no concerns about the reputation of University of Alberta (11 times out of the past 17 years, the top pharmacy student in board exams has been a U of A graduate!). It's just that I applied for residence at the school, and they gave me a double room to share with someone else. Hopefully, the waitlist would move and I'll be able to get my single room (if I do decide to attend U of A, that is).
