Unique Occupations in Pakistan

I’ve been thinking about some of the jobs that people do in Pakistan that they don’t have in the west. Like the wala who takes care of the white horse for weddings. Like paan wale. Like ricksha wale. Like the sugar cane juicers. Etc. What others can you think of that are unique to the subcontinent?

Re: Unique Occupations in Pakistan

In pakistan there are these guys who carry little cart.
They have a thing on it, which makes cotton candy. You give them
suger they make warm cotton candy for you out of that suger.

Once my Korean boss told me that she remember those cotton candy makers back in Korea too.

Re: Unique Occupations in Pakistan

Pakoray laylo wala who comes round in the villages selling pakoray. What about the hairdressor who comes round to shave new born baby's hair or to cut the pind's chaudry's hair at his house. We also have the choori laylo wali and the sabzi wali/wala.

Yes -- and the khusre who always know when a wedding is going to happen and come around to harass/bless the occasion?

And the chowkidar going around in a neighbourhood blowing his mournful whistle at night to let the residents know he is on the job. (But doesn't that also let the chors know exactly where he is?...)

There are some sugar cane juice walas in Canada.

Cotton candy wala are found in fairs in USA. They do not hawk in the streets though. Also cotton candy is sold in bags and plastic buckets.

But it is true many kind of street hawkers are not found in USA like:
Sabzi wala
doodh wala
machli wala
gola ganda wala ( gola ganda is sold in stores in its different form.
Aam wala
Chooran wala
kapray wala
Bhangi is not found in USA ( Bhangi which will come to your house to clean your toilet. In offices they have those bhangies , they are called Janitors)
Teen dabbay wala
Raddi wala
Ghubbaray wala
Churi chaqo taiz karnay wala
Chaat wala
Gajak wala
Boosi tukray wala.
Murghi wala (lol)

But there is Ice cream walas who come in an ice cream trucks. In some streets of LA suburbs where there is majority of Mexican folks living I have seen . Ice cream wala pushing a hand cart. I have also seen some khilonay walas there too.

Re: Unique Occupations in Pakistan

Ahhhhh.....so we are ahead of the race cuz i'm sure we've had those kids around for ages before this place came up with the concept of recycling :D

:omg:

I think teh thread starter is looking for serious replies

Re: Unique Occupations in Pakistan

Pani wala ... you must have seen small afghan kids running after the buses and selling their stuff for a rupee or two ..

Considering the hot and humid weather of Pakistan , they have found a niche in the market :)

phooloon wala kids are always selling asian jasmines and roses.

or Islamic books choti choti duaoon ki books

Bhungees who clean blocked main sewer lines by swimming down the holes and unblock them without any protective gear.

Re: Unique Occupations in Pakistan

tandoor wala
rabri wala

teen daba baich wala

No Faalsay walas in Canada. :(

OK, so what are these?

Some of these, the only real difference is that in Pakistan they are itinerant or pushcart walas, rather than having a shop.

I was more thinking about occupations that just aren't found/needed in the west. Like the guy whose business is providing the white horse for the wedding.

hmmm

there is one unique occupation

when u go to some court to pay your traffic fine of lets 200Rs. You go there to pay and u ll be welcomed by few blokes asking why are u here and would take 220Rs. (20Rs) on top the actual fine, go in there pay on your behalf and bring you back your papers. You can sit and listen to Nusrat fateh ali in your "Thandi" car. :)

or if you say no thank you, i can go in myself and pay the fine. Just tell me where the room is ? you ll get sweet reply. "Lub le ape hy"
and then you ll have to spend a while looking for the damn building/room and when you finally manage to find the actual place, the guy siting there collecting fine will stare at you as if he has seen some alien. thing is they dont expect ppl coming in to collect their papers.............. not his fault lol

Re: Unique Occupations in Pakistan

Some what along the line of what Lafanter said, people sitting outside govt offices such as ID card and court offering to fill out your paperwork. They know all the legal jargon that the govt clerks inside are used to and know how to fill out the forms just right. Yeah, they are like lawyer minus the big fees.

Right, right! Do they have an actual name? In America they would be called paralegals, I think, only they aren't quite so -- hey wait a minute...aren't they called munshis? Or are those just the guys who do the writing and form filling for people trying to deal with the courts (or whatever)?
