Unfair Treatment for Benn

Who is the culprit once again? Our own Chris Broad. Sometimes I think India did fine with him. He got what he deserved from India in SA. In my opinion Watson should have been fined heavier as no one provoked him.

Who is the referee for Pak vs Aus series? Same crappy Chris Broad?

Tony Cozier

Anyone who has followed Sulieman Benn’s career, not least those who play against him in Barbados club cricket, know that the beanpole left-arm spinner is no saint. There are previous convictions on his disciplinary record at West Indies and club level to reveal his feisty nature on the field.

**But the International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Chris Broad, the former England opening batsman, needs to explain why he chose to hand Benn a more stringent penalty under the code of conduct, suspending him for the next two one-day internationals, than Australians Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson, who were fined for their on-field altercation during the third Test in Perth but can continue playing.
**
Benn, supported by team manager Joel Garner and captain Chris Gayle, pleaded not guilty at a hearing with Broad. The Australians pleaded guilty, pre-empting a hearing. The code of conduct penalises players for “conducting themselves in any way that is not in accordance with the spirit of the game”.

Surely all three were involved in the relevant incident. As Tony Greig, the former England captain, now television commentator, stated afterwards “a blanket should be thrown over all three, with the same penalty”.

An ICC statement quoted Broad as saying: "The decision to find Sulieman guilty of a Level 2 offence is indicative of the fact that conduct contrary to the spirit of the game is completely unacceptable. I hope he has learnt his lesson and will be careful in the future." (Broad’s statement for Benn)

Yet no similar comments were directed at Haddin and Johnson. Indeed, Broad rebuked Haddin for provoking Benn but warned only the West Indian that if he transgressed again within a year his charge could be upgraded to level three.

The West Indies management in Australia has stated that, while it will not appeal Broad’s decision, it will send a letter of protest to the ICC over the disparity. Broad has previously suspended Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir for a Test for elbowing Australian bowler Shane Watson who was fined 10% of his match fee for “inappropriate verbal engagement with an opposing player” in the incident.

Yesterday Broad again had to deal with Watson on the fourth day of the final Test against West Indies in Perth. This time he fined him 15 % of his match fee for the same offence, not showing due respect for the opponent, by running down the pitch and screaming at West Indies captain Chris Gayle after dismissing him.

Broad’s euphemistic comment for the snarling Australian was that “Shane is a very energetic and enthusiastic bowler but on this occasion he has gone too far” (Broad’s statement for Shane Watson). But not far enough for a suspension which, seemingly, doesn’t apply to Australians.

Re: Unfair Treatment for Benn

Racism at its best clearly. I think WICB should have appealed this decision to begin with and also file complaint with ICC. The ones who initiated the conflict got away without any suspension. Shame on Chris Broad once again, racist SOB.

Re: Unfair Treatment for Benn

Well Benn would need to contemplate on why he can be provoked so easily - still its unfair and unjust and hard to interpret this decision any other way than being biased.

Re: Unfair Treatment for Benn

Had it been Asif or any other bowler celebrating a wicket like Watson, he'd have been banned. Aussies get in trouble the most but rarely get the punishment. Whereas one offense by other players and they are banned.

Re: Unfair Treatment for Benn

its just not Aussies these referees are biased against - they are biased against the skin

Mike Proctor , Mike Dennes , Jeff Crowe , Chris Broad , Clive Lloyd ( surprising) are all same.

an offense by these white playes is either ignored or passed over as an aggression whereas player from subcontinent is severly penalised for minor of the minor offenses

Re: Unfair Treatment for Benn

that was pure racism... but what a match... :)

A desi poster from a cricket blog says

Shane watson is fined 15% of his match fee and Broad says,
"Shane is a very energetic and enthusiastic bowler but on this occasion he has gone too far by running down the wicket screaming, thereby not showing due respect for the opponent. While handing down the punishment, I took into account that Shane admitted his mistake by pleading guilty."

Zaheer Khan is fined 80% of his fee and broad says,
"Clearly, this sort of behaviour is not acceptable at any level of cricket - it showed a lack of respect for the player who had been dismissed. Respect for the opposition was something that we talked about in the pre-series meeting I had with both captains and so it was disappointing that Zaheer behaved in this way.
Broad considered Zaheer's good disciplinary record in delivering the fine. "He also pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and was very apologetic while also promising not to repeat the offence," Broad said.

Re: Unfair Treatment for Benn

everyone know about Chris Broad. He should be banned from Cricket and ICC should take notice of that.

Re: Unfair Treatment for Benn

Aussies get away with everything especially when the match officials are Kiwis or Pommies.

Re: Unfair Treatment for Benn

Broad is a moron. someone tell the jackass that the empire is dead. retard...

Chris Broad did what the rules say. Watson did have the same offense 14 months back, but it can’t be used to elevate this one to level 2 (because it was outside 12 month period)

Benn’s part in all this was a disgrace. First he did an almost football like tackle, then threatened verbally, and also in attempting to throw the ball back at batsman. He was clearly getting physical and was rightfully slapped with a ban.

There is difference in showing passion and in being all physical about it.

Sure Haddin pointed the bat at Benn, but to me it seemed like he was trying to make a point and not saying “I’ll bust your head with it”.

On top of it Benn didn’t even admit he was guilty.

And finally, the racist remark is the weakest argument one can make. I rank it along side, ‘match is fixed’, 'throwing wickets because of player politics" etc as one of the arguments we make when we don’t like the obvious and more straightforward explanation.

Great example...

Re: Unfair Treatment for Benn

^ And others should be fined 90% of the GS time fee?

its more of a race against time instead of racism
