Unemployment ? What unemployment ?

I would talk from USA’s perspective.
There are many things I could use help from those who say they are jobless and cannot find a job.
For example.
If they charge reasonable rates I could use help to make some flower beds in my front and backyard.
It costs 300 dollars to build a 4’x20’ flower bed.
If someone can come every weekend and clean my car and wash it off for me I am willing to pay 5 dollars for each wash . I am sure the whole neighborhood will be willing to do so. But I do not see any such service.
It will cost you at least 60 dollars for cleaning and washing car.
There is no cheap pickup and drop laundry service . It will cost you an arm and a leg if you wish to get a load of clothes laundered.
Domestic help will break your bank if you think about hiring someone to come and help you out with your house hold chores.
On the other hand I see jobless people resorting to petty crimes or rob a store of 20 dollars. This same guy could easily earn an honest days pay if he/she knocks someone’s door and offer those kind of services at a drastic reduction.
I can give you an example. Once my neighbor’s kid said that he would cut grass of my front and back for 5 dollars , I happily agreed as the professional ask 40 dollars for same work. I even paid 10 dollars to that kid.

So my question is why is there unemployment although there is plenty of work out there but people are not willing to work at drastically reduced rate ?

House painting , window washing, hedge trimming , house cleaning by a third party are luxuries in USA . Why , if millions and millions are jobless ?
The maid service costs 70 to 150 dollars for one 2 to 3 hours visit. The same kind of work people do at a minimum rate in hotels and motels but want lot of money for same work in private houses . Why ?

Re: Unemployment ? What unemployment ?

O.k Agreed. But how can you think people willl be ready to take up these works?Certainly those who used to do some `high-stuff jobs',turned jobless one day suddenly ,may not take up these jobs. There makes a void .

Pra ji you are talking about obvious. When one car plant closes 20 to 30 thousand assembly line , jobs are lost. Those people were not doing high-stuff. USA has millions and millions of jobless claims , all of those are not by high-stuff doing people.
A break job in USA costs somewhere 200 to 500 dollars and cost of parts in this case is only 10 to 50 bucks the rest is labor.
If you want a toilet changed in your restroom, It will cost 200 to 500 dollars , a toilet bowl will cost you only 50 to 200 dollars. Rest is labor cost.
Those assembly line workers can perform these jobs for less. No ?

Re: Unemployment ? What unemployment ?

After you are done at Mirch's house - you can come over to mine. Don't forget your "jharroo"

Arleitter - depends on your attitude and circumstances. If it was up to me to put food on the table for my children - you'd see me working in McDonalds the next day.

But that's just me. Some people feel that type of work is beneath them

Re: Unemployment ? What unemployment ?

Hmm... so, i am sending my high-profile CV's to both of ya.
And no dogs... then we might agree.

great thread, I totally understand.

I mean who needs employment anyway, why dont they stay home all day.

If they get hungry why dont they eat Cake ?

810 rupay bantay hain sirf kahan say ho ga-a ?

Re: Unemployment ? What unemployment ?

Mirch...you're right. But. The way things work here makes it almost impossible. Once a person gets a job, they no longer receive unemployment and many times the unemployment check is more money than they'd make doing the things you mentioned. The ones who benefit from getting and doing the types of jobs you mentioned are usually the illegal immigrants or legal immigrants without english language skills. We have a job-shop in our town where all of these people gather in the morning and wait for people to come hire them. Invariably, they are hard workers, do wonderful work at very reasonable rates and are so very appreciative of getting even the smallest job.

Anyone who wanted work surely could go to the job-shop,, many towns have them. And since most of the work is "off the books" (ie., not reported to the gov't so no income taxes are paid etc), a person could still receive their unemployment checks while earning extra cash from the job-shop. Yet most people on unemployment would not go for it.
