If you are a single woman that is unemployed but has more than the nisab amount in savings, do you still pay zakat?
I’ve heard that you don’t have to pay it if you’re not working. I have even heard that you don’t have to pay it if you’re living with your parents and are not “on your own.” I have also heard that you should minus the amount you usually spend for your own needs before calculating how much you owe in zakat. I feel iffy about all these things that I’ve heard. Alright people, help me out and shed some light on the matter. Jazak Allah for your help.
sounds more like a tax expert talking about 'loopholes' in the tax system.
if you own certain amount of assets and a year has passed then zakaat is due unless it's exempted by shar'iat, unemployment or living with parents are not exemptions under shari'a.
If the person who has savings above nisab then they can invest in a business and that will be classed as expense. This is one way to convert savings into income and avoid zakat. Zakat is designed to increase "dynamic" wealth ... which is the circulation of commodities and valuables - it is not a tax in that sense.
You cannot give a loan and expect to be free from zakat, because loans are zakatable upon the lender.
Some people give gifts to others that reduces their savings ... some people buy a gift for themselves and it changes the nature of the wealth ... but that would only work with jewelry. Very wearily ... gems are generally not considered zakatable. But if you are prudent then you might deem them to be so.
These are possible ways to make things work ... inshaAllah.
Okay, so if you're single and unemployed, that has no bearing on zakat then? As long as u have more than the nisab amount, you have to pay zakat? Correct?
