Can you explain why 64bit? =] As far as I know 64 bit has a lot of problems with adobe product and also 64 bit supported applications arent that much on market, although they can support 32 bit too but some of them cant get the extended support for 64 bit processors.
If you are talking about 4 or more than 4 GB Ram support then I think it is supported in Windows 7 or you can tweak it up to support it on 32 bit too.

64 bit version is require to support RAM which is greater than 3G .. it has nothing to do with OS .. you gota have 64 BIT addressing to read/write any memory address beyond 3G .. .. tweaking up software would not help since its hardware lmitations
Windows 7 does not supprt it by default, you gota have 64 bit version.
and there are almost every software which has 64 bit version on the way

32-bit windows cannot read more that about 3 GB of RAM. If you have 32-bit Windows on a 4 GB RAM, about 1 GB will go waste and will remain un-used.
If a laptop has 4 GB of RAM, it means it has 64-bit version of Windows 7.

^^ I do have understood that and I tested 2 weeks ago a 32 bit processor with Windows 7 and tweaked it to support 4Gig.
More on you should Google for the problems related to 64 bit and adobe PS and other adobe products along with software support for 32 bit and 64bit, as she mainly want a pc for PS.
Although it is a fact that if a software is nicely supported on 64 bit then its the best but such cases are rare.
I myself have 2 64bit machines, but as said sometimes I have to switch to 32 bit machine just due to software conflicts on 64bit.

A 32-bit OS can support 4GB!! The reality is that not all of that RAM is made available to the OS all the time as the system reserves portions.
Dont avoid BIOS updates. They almost always do more good than harm. In the rare times they actually brake existing functionality then yes roll back.
Now to actually answer the question…
There are several factors that come into play regarding the maximum amount of RAM in your computer. The first and most obvious as everyone points out is the architecture of the system (32 or 64 bit) since 32 Bit systems impose a theoretical maximum of 4GB. This number is determined as the maximum number of addressable values a 32 bit number can have.
As some others have pointed out, you dont see all of this memory in windows sometimes but that does not mean it is going to waste! You dont “lose” the RAM its simply being used by the system. (For things like PCI/PCI-X, graphics e.t.c.)
Finally there are some other factors the determine the amount of memory you can put in your system, the most prevalent of these is the motherboard chipset, the next being the BIOS.
Your laptop uses the Intel 945GM chipset which contains the 82945GM graphics/memory controller - Maximum supported by this chipset is 4GB
So the final option is the BIOS. Sony list your model as having a maxmimum of only 2GB http://www.docs.sony.com/release/specs/VGNSZ340-CTO_mksp.pdf.
Since your chipset can support 4GB but your BIOS reports 3GB I would say the most likely answer is that you are in fact correct that your system simply does not currently support 4GB.
In systems that can see all 4GB the bios reports 4GB still.
So basically, the answer is you are correct. Check if there is a BIOS update, its quite likely there simply is not a newer one. If there is, try it out, it may work. Even if it does however you will not see a full 4GB of ram in your system due the the reasons above.
More on: Windows has supported this feature since XP SP2 in order to allow DAE to work - but the memory was capped at 4 GB to keep the system from self destruction.

there is a factor which is called . “every hardwar can be simulated using software” .. .. using a ram with software tweaks is possible but it would be like ADDING extra over head to system with LESS efficiency. its the same as you OVER CLOCK your CPU .. .. .. (well not exactly same but kind a) .. ..
but on practical terms .. u need 64 BITS to address any ADDRESS or STORED location in RAM which is 4G and higher .. .. i can give u math if u want

if you undetrstand the concept of Virtual Machine then you might be familiar with the fact that you can install another OS which would run from your HOST OS. the hardware for gues OS is of your choice. You can tweak it in your software (VMWare virtual Machine) with 2 processors, 8Gig of ram or what you like .. .. though your real hardware may be just 1 processor with 1G ram ..

Your selections look fine, I would add the following points to consider:
Make sure the laptop’s RAM is upgradable to 8 GB for future use.
Laptops with graphic cards are more problematic, they burn out easily. So it’s better to go for a laptop without a graphics card.
Both Sony and Dell are good, but Dell is always less cheaper as compared to Sony and has more hardware support in Pakistan as compared to Sony.

Dude, most laptops don’t have a discrete graphics card, but rather a graphics chip (IGP) which is mounted on the MB. These laptops are mostly designed for simple tasks and office use though.
If you want to play games and edit photos/videos, then a real graphics card is a must for you.
And yeah Maham, make sure that the RAM is upgradeable. But that would pretty much mean that you’d have to pay more $$$. 4GB are good for now though.
