Understanding Depression

Depression isn’t just bad moods and occasional melancholy. It’s not just feeling down or sad, either. These feelings are normal in kids, especially during the teen years. Even when major disappointments and setbacks make people feel sad and angry, the negative feelings usually lessen with time.

But when a depressive state, or mood, lingers for a long time — weeks, months, or even longer — and limits a person’s ability to function normally, it can be diagnosed as depression.

Types of depression include: major depression, dysthymia, adjustment disorder with depressed mood, seasonal affective disorder, and bipolar disorder or manic depression… Can You Ppl Talk More On It Lets Get Rid of Depression From Our Life.

Re: Understanding Depression

Unfortunately depression (and mental health generally) in our community isn't taken seriously enough. My aunt has it and has been told on a number of occasions by her husband/brothers/other elders that she 'has a great life and has nothing to be depressed over so stop being so silly.'

South East Asian's are more prone to depression due to certain issues prevalent in our community that don't face people from other parts of the world. There is always pressure for us to put up with crap from others, extended family issues etc and that does take its toll.

Depression isn't just an illness that makes people feel suicidal, symptoms can actually be less severe than that, for example putting yourself down, feeling worthless, losing hope, loss of energy, loss of appetite, inability to sleep well etc. This makes it harder to diagnose. Couple that with the people around you not offering you the support you so desperately need, it becomes very dangerous!
