Uncommon words used for common things

so what are some uncommon/unusual words you have in your vocab for the common things that other people ( belonging to different ethnic backgrounds/communities/cultures etc) find funny sounding.

example we use the word “Mori” for bath/shower area in restroom.
“Kakus” for toilet
“Rakharna” for someone who roams outside too much

Re: Uncommon words used for common things

what language do these words come from. i think people who speak this language do NOT find it weird/funny…is it?

Mori is also used for ‘naali’, which is a small outlet for water to flow out of kitchens or bathrooms

My dad always called plate, rakaabi. He used to call toliya, tawaal.

Re: Uncommon words used for common things

my dad called rikaabii too but only the ones made of copper.

he called tashtari for saucer. my sisters called long cooking spoons a Dauwwa and the flat spatula a Kafgeer [kaf = hand; geer = pakaRne waalaa] and also the small deep frying pan [just big enough to fry an egg (sunny side up] a kalchhulii

Re: Uncommon words used for common things

We also say tashtari for saucer!

I don’t know if these count, but:

degchi/pot/patila is **bhagona
**
banana/kayla is **maus

**Instead of saying “geela” for like when your hair is wet, we say “baal’aan **kachay **hogayay”

When it’s raining: “Paani paraha hai”

Taking a shower: “paani nahaakay aaye’a main”

:cb:

Re: Uncommon words used for common things

It is always ‘bhagawna’ in our family too. I was surprised when I saw that people call it ‘pateeli’ which we never use.

Re: Uncommon words used for common things

there once was a Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh whose name was Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna…when i heard his name for the first time and before i knew the correct pronunciation of the utensil “Bhagona”i wondered why his name sounds like a pot? :cb:

Queer, there is a difference between a Bhagona and a pateeli. bhagona is as wide at the base as it is at the rim while pateeli is wide at the base and at the rim with a narrower neck.

Bhagona

pateeli

lol…why don’t you go to a Bhojpuri Library in Jhumri Talaiya and ask for a Bhojpuri Dictionary [shabdaavli] and look these words up for yourself?
