‘Le Grand Voyage’ shows amongst other issues the regular misunderstandings and problems between children born and/or raised in European countries while their parents were born and raised Asian or African countries.
I wondered if it wouldn’t be another cliché filled movie about generation clashes. However, I was curious how these two very different personalities would react to each other, being left with mostly just each other on their journey to Mecca by car.
The movie turned out to be a an amazing experience. It showed a lot more than just issues between a father and son who grew up in different cultures and have different opinions about religion. They annoyed each other, misunderstood each other, argued, experienced different adventures and went through both nice and upsetting events during their journey from France to Mecca, but in the end they understood each other and actually enjoyed each others company.
The ending was sad and beautiful at the same time. Sad for the son, beautiful for the father who experienced something most Muslims would wish for themselves. Definitely worth watching. It’s on YouTube, the person who uploaded the movie, missed about 2-3 minutes from the beginning, but is just one of the main characters on the road, so it’s alright.
