Umru Ayyar.....

At least till 1990 in Pakistan, these Umru Ayyar books were very popular among kids/ teens.

I hear they are not read/found anywhere today. Anyone know the reasons?

Secondly, and more importantly, does anyone know when they started? Was it the late 70s or the 80s?

Tilsim e Hosh Ruba. the original books ..dastaan e amir hamza was written ages ago. they have multiple translations of it and versions of the original story.

Umro ayyar and Ameer hamza novels were just addictive....i had a big collection of these books.

As Pir Sahib mentioned…the original supposedly is a voluminous book that has been translated/condensed in various languages. I believe the original daastan was in Persian though.

I read quite a few books of the daastan by A. Hameed. They were spell-binding then. I was fascinated and always compared how many-mann wazi gurz one of the chief characters was carrying!

Good times… :k:

he was more notorious for his appetite.. the Gurz was for Landhoor if i recall the name correctly.

Salam All,

Thank you for your replies.

What I wanted to know was whether someone knew when the urdu books for kids started coming out in Pakistan; you know, the ones published by Ferozesons or others. The tarzan character is also 50-60 years old, but it really got popular in Pakistan around the early 80s.

And if anyone knows, did kids always read them in Pakistan, or was it something that started off in the early 80s or early 70s.

dunno when.. I'm sure they were there in the seventies though.

Dastan e Amir Hamza was first written in Akbar's time. I think it was written by Mullah Do Piaza (Akbar's right hand man).

I read the books published by Ferozsons in the early eighties. There were ten volumes of Amir Hamza and ten of Tilism Hosh ruba. In those days Ferozsons was one of the major publishers for urdu books esp childrens books. As far as I know, the "dastan" has always been a favourite with kids- Ibne Safi used to mention in interviews that he read the Dastan at a very young age. I don't know what is a favourite with kids these days though.

Langoor it is :k: PA you gotta sharp memory!

awww meray bachpan ke din kitnay achay they din :(

Yeah I remember. My Mamoo, "Naseer-u-Din Haider" wrote quite a few books for kids including the ones you mentioned. He started writing Umroo Ayyar stories in early or mid 70's.

He later switched gears and started wtiting religious books, for which he has won few awards.

Everytime I visit him in Paktsan, I always depart with books that are no longer available in book stores. He no longer writes, and is living a very quite and private life.

reminds me of old days when i was in pakistan...i use to read them alot..

is there any place we can find them on net..

Umroo ki zanbeel has to be one of the greatest magical power in the history of super heroes.

I was so addicted to the novels that I read the skinny novels for 2 RS under the blanket with a flast light, so my mother wouldn't yell at me for staying up late. Those days... ah. And then momphali during winter.
