i read it ages ago...iss liay kafi kuch bhool gayee hooN...but what i still remember is that the story was about the life of prostitutes, their education, customs bla bla.....
The Herione Umrao was quite a fascinating character. Though a prostitute by profession she left an impression of self-respecting dignified and gracious woman....
And instead of disliking her we feel like that she is more sinned against than sinning...
now u tell me ur version...since u have read it recently....is it worth reading again???
I saw the Pakistani movie Umrao Jan Ada starring Rani. Loved that song...Kaa'aatay na katay ray ratiyaan.

HaN the Indian movie version is excellent. Bahut khoobsurati kay saath banaaee gayee film hai...

btw, Naikoo it's Umrao Jaan Ada aur Jaan-e-Adaa nahin hai; Umrao Jaan naam tha aur Adad takkhalus..aap ko zaroor dobaara paRhnee chahiye :)
