How would you rate the performances of the umpires till now in this series?
I think they’ve all done a fairly good job:k: Especially the difficult desicions have been right and only very few errors have been made in those close calls. However, every now and again each umpire has made a blunder…desicions which were clear to even the layman have gone the other way remarkably, a few come to mind:
The LBW of Inzi in the 3rd match to Tendulkar
Quite a few ‘wide’ calls, which quite apparantly brushed the (tigh) pads
Some wide calls on the off-side
Simon Taufell has been exceptional as usual. Ghauri was ordinairy but I think Asad Rauf has been outstanding. After Aleem Dar he looks like the next best Pak umpire by a mile :k:
Why can't they have neutral umpires from both ends is something which I find intriguing.... (I am not necessarily saying that these Pak umpires are incompetent/biased)....I mean I just dont see the logic in having one neutral umpire and one host country umpire....what is it that we are trying to achieve...
Yeah I agree some1 we should have both neutral umpires like Imran Khan called for long ago. But it's an ICC decision which is still caught up in a colonial mindset...but I think that's probably going to change in the not too distant future. It's ludicrous really.
I don't like the idea of neutral umpires from both ends. I think Test matches should also follow one local umpire formula. It gives home umpires an opportunity to officiate matches in their own country which means a lot. Imagine, Shep or Hair not being able to officiate a match in Lords or the MCG respectively.
Cricketers need to start trusting umpires and give their decision making skills the utmost respect. The preamble of the game is to play the sport in the 'spirit of the game'. Why are we even thinking of some umpire that might cheat. That's nonsense.
This ofcourse doesn't mean there is no check on inept umpires. ICC should monitor them and give them promotions or demotions according to their performance.
Remember one thing, the best umpire is one who makes the least mistakes. They will all make mistakes.
Getting back onto the topic of this particular series.. I find Ghauri to be extremely mediocre and inconsistent. Asad Rauf was a bit too harsh in deciding wide balls. Tufnel and Shephard are good umpires. The problem with umpiring is that the technology (Hawk system and replays) have made it so tough that any wrong decision is easily caught, dissected and umpire bad-mouthed by millions of TV viewers before even the next delivery is bowled. I don't envy the role of umpires for a moment. They are in a tough spot, and they should be extremely good to be in that role.
The other option is to make all this technology available to field umpires as well, but that would delay the proceeding beyond the acceptable limit. So, in all fairness, umpires have to be consistently very very good.

can anyone explain to me the computer-simulated replays for LBW's literally a few seconds after the play? and who says it is accurate?
