For months, we’ve all been waiting for some news on Umera Ahmed’s upcoming projects. The admins of her page have been answering some questions to give us a better idea of what she’s working on. Here’s what I’ve learned so far.
Her upcoming novel is Aab-e-hayat (sequel of peer-e-kamil) starting this month in khwateen digest. Finally she decided to quit after almost all her novels are dramatized.I am sure she will be forced into it by the producers after she has written few more novels.
Shukar hai!! Her last couple of dramas have been mediocre. Kankar, muhabbat subh ka sitara hai. Even zindigi gulzaar hai offered nothing new and reeked of bigotry against rich/ affluent folks as did kankaar. Good riddance I say
Durr-e-shehwar and Meri Zaat are top of the line dramas. The screenplay and dialogues are reminiscent of golden era of PTV plays. No play or film made in recent times can come close to their class. If Umera's latest plays Muhabbat Subh ka sitara and ZGH did not meet expectations I'll blame the producer and director more than anybody else. It is their job to get the best out of the writer.
I don't think Kankar was that bad. It made people think and talk about domestic violence. Shehr e Zaat was also a good script.
DeS is classic. Kankar was also brilliant. Credit due not just to the writer but also the actors especially Sanam Baloch. Both are among her best work. She can play any role with ease.

Whatchu smoking girl? Kankar was an awesome play. In a veryyy long time did my family sat together to watch a drama. It was like the 80s/90s all over again.
I enjoyed Zindagi Gulzar Hai. Not all people that belong to the lower socioeconomic class are naik and righteous. On one hand you have the hardworking and humble Samina Peerzada and her daughters while on the other hand you have her self-centered, irresponsible husband and his second wife. Not all people from the wealthy class are the same. Zaroon's father has a different nature from his mother. Zaroon's friend...who later proposed to Kashf....did not display the same high and might attitude that Zaroon and Asmara did. Zaroon and his sister had diametrically different views. So there is variation amongst the masses of the classes.
Moving on to Kankar....abuse is not confined to a socioecomic class. Kiran's father was abusive to her mother just as her wealthy FIL was abusive to his wife. Piety is not confined to any particular class. Kiran's wealthy tayi, Arzoo's mom, was no less meddlesome and obnoxious than adnan's sister, Rukhsar. Arzoo's dad had more of a conscience than his wife. Again, there's variation in character among the classes and the characters show growth; they're not totally stagnant. The only issue I had with Kankar was that it did not address Kiran's faults in her former marriage.
I don't hate Umera Ahmed. I've found spiritual lessons from several of her dramas that were relevant to my life at the time; gave me some food for thought and I like dramas that can encourage introspection.
