Donate Your Baby’s Umbilical Cord Blood

Your baby’s umbilical cord blood could give hope to a patient with leukemia, aplastic anemia or other blood diseases. The blood-forming cells found in cord blood are being studied under research protocols as a new method for treating patients in need.

Each year thousands of patients are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases that can be treated by rebuilding the patient’s hematopoietic (blood cell producing) system with blood-forming cells. Umbilical cord blood is being studied as one of the sources of blood cells.
Donating cord blood is medically safe. The cord blood is collected from the umbilical cord after your baby is born.
Donation does not change the birth process.
The umbilical cord and placenta are usually thrown away after a baby is born.
Donating cord blood is free to you and completely confidential.

According to Islamic teachings is it allowed to donate your baby’s Umblical cord?

Re: Umbilical Cord

Nothing unIslamic about it. Islam is the only monotheistic religion that has no problem with embryological stem cell research, because we don't believe life is breathed in at conception. Its breathed in like a month later (40 days if I remember correctly). So, I doubt umbilical cords would cause problems. You end up throwing them away anyway.

Re: Umbilical Cord

I haven't read any religious rulings about it, would be good if somebody can post more information with references.

Re: Umbilical Cord

Organ donation is okay (with certain constraints), so I’d presume donation of after-birth is too:

And there is cautious approval of Stem Cell research:

Connecting the dots, I’d say it’s a yes…
