LAHORE: Test cricketer Umar Akmal has been detained by police after a quarrel with a traffic warden.
According to police the incident happened near Firdous Market where Umar Akmal violated a traffic signal and then not only had an argument with the traffic warden but also threatened him.
According to Umar Akmal he told the traffic warden that he had to get somewhere and was getting late, after which the warden not only abused him but also man handled him.
According to witnesses an argument between Umar Akmal and the warden started when Umar refused to show the car documents to the warden.
After the incident Umar Akmal’s father also reached the Liberty Police Station where the police insist that an FIR will be launched and Umar will be charged and arrested.
Umar Akmal is claiming that the warden had slapped and abused him. Akmal was driving a Mercedes and it’s interesting that the warden stopped him. It’s unusual for the traffic police in Pakistan to stop a Mercedes or other expensive car.
The following is from dawn.
Pakistan’s young batting star Umar Akmal was booked and detained by the police on Saturday after a scuffle with a traffic warden in the city of Lahore.
The case has been registered at the Gulberg police station in whose jurisdiction the alleged incident happened.
Umar, who is often criticised by cricket experts as being too brash on the field, was reportedly driving to a friends wedding when he, according to the warden, broke three traffic lights between Cavalry Ground and Firdous Market and was “also over-speeding.” When the the 23-year-old was eventually pulled over and handed a ticket (challan) for his violations, a scuffle broke out.
“He violated a traffic signal and when he was stopped by the traffic warden he misbehaved with him, got abusive and also tore his shirt,” senior police official Tariq Aziz told reporters on Saturday.
Aziz said physically assaulting and tearing the shirt of a police officer was a serious violation.
“He is presently detained at the police station for questioning,” he added.
However, Umar, 23, denied the charges and told reporters that the traffic warden had slapped him and abused him over a minor issue.
“His behaviour was inappropriate to say the least. I came to the police station to register a complaint and instead they have detained me,” he added.
Earlier, Inquiry officer Zahid Nawaz said Umar tore the uniform of one of the traffic wardens on duty and slapped him as three police officials tried to stop the player’s Mercedes.
Nawaz also said Umar claimed the warden first grabbed his shirt, “but I have done the inquiry and no such thing happened.”
Umar was charged with “violating traffic rules, interfering in government work and “scuffling” with a traffic official.
There Are Always Two Sides To Every Story
I shall refrain from taking any sides here because we simply don't know the full picture yet.
Unfortunately we know how traffic wardens can abuse power badly.
Apparently Umar Akmal was driving within the realm of traffic laws when a traffic warden suddenly stopped and **slapped him **and then took him to jail.
If this is true then the warden has abused his position. Still I think it would be wrong to generalize and crucify the whole institution
“He violated a traffic signal and when he was stopped by the traffic warden he misbehaved with him, got abusive and also tore his shirt,” senior police official Tariq Aziz told reporters on Saturday.
and if this is true then UA's behaviour is out of order
Not letting family members or PCB officials meet with UA doesn't seem right to me
or it could be that both UA & the warden are guilty and it's a strong case of police abuse and someone powerful getting personal or abusive (and being rightfully detained)
well the other day I was listening to news a man set his bike on fire because from alst 4 days wardenwas fining him though he was not breaking the signal, warden said humay upper se order hai k sham tak itnay pasay le kr he anay han, tu kabhi kabhie humay bilawaja chalan karna parta hai
the other day, an MNA slapped a traffic warden and nothing happened. Umar Akmal is an idiot to make that comment on ARY but you have to admit that he was treated rather a bit harshly because he had to spent the night in the police lockup while the MNA walked free.

he is right, police walon ko chahiye isko apnay sir pe bitha ke rakhayn
There are always two sides to a story and that is the case in this particular situation. We don’t really know what happened, but things happen, and Umar should remember that his ultimate goal should be to remain focused on the game.
