Alright, i’ve tried to figure this out on my own but no luck. Why is ullu da (u know) so bad??
I mean ullu is an owl which implies being wise in English. So why is it so bad in Punjabi/Urdu?

I think we should urge NYA and/or chann ji to solve our dilemma. And why is patha a bad word? Doesn't it simply mean muscle in punjabi?
It is not the "patha" part which is a problem, it is the fact that you are calling the other person's father an ullo, which is considered a stupid bird in our culture.
So, infact you are calling the other person's father an idiot, and that is considered more insulting than if you say something to the person directly.
paTha also means bacha..like paTh, paThora(bakri da).
Hayaa there is no dilemma there..either one is ullo da paTha or not. You should stop spreading rumours like that about NYA...
and i always thought its a term of endearment....

That was so simple. See hayaa, we tried to crack this one over chat but didn’t work, and now it all seems so simple. Like father like son?
All this time i kept saying ‘ullu ka kuch lagta’ instead of ‘patha’ b/c it somehow seemed less intense, and this whole time it meant the same thing
From the sounds of it, it sounds like a very mild swear word. Imagine someone translating it..you son of an owl. ermm..
Naik ji, tussi ais kar kay chann ji nu ajj tak ay bulanday si? :-O
snickers
kujh khaas lokkan nu piyar naal kiha janda ay...ullo na howe te!
Patha means "student"...no?
Like for wrestlers "Falana pehalwan patha timkana pehalwan"
One of my masters used to say "Jadoun tayeen toun mera patha ayen..." meaning "Jab tak tum mere shagird ho..."
So its basically calling your teacher ullu, which, long time ago, would be taken very seriously.
Never heard patha = bacha.
Patha means .. "young" but not adult ... its old punjabi. Usually boys of ages 12-15 are called "pahtay munday" or girls "pathee kurdian".
Patha doesn't mean student.
who---me aka toti pahalwaN,
jub ba'at ka pata na ho tou moun nahiN khola kartay, ullu!
patha doesnt mean shagird? I am pretty sure that it does. But then I have never looked it up in the dictionary. Know it from general punjabi conversation.
so Who-Me's master ji was calling him "toon mera paTha munda ain"? wow baRha baiRha master si...eh te sidhi line maarda si.:)
I guess in some way the word paTha means all of above, bachRa, follower, shagird, adolescent etc etc. depends upon how you use the word it can mean either of above.
I second who--me but I do think his teacher was an ullu
I've never felt satisfied just by saying ullu da...there is always an urge to follow it by another two or three worded expression.
If for some reason I have to restrict myself to this mediocre reference then I try to deliver it with conviction.
Here is how u do justice to this cute expression
Ullu (preferably a hoonh face)
daaaaaa (da pay zor or da ko lumba karaiN)
P (hold the P for 2 seconds)
Patha (Patha should sound like a real bad word)
Note: u will find a lot of ullu day pathay in Image gallery. :-o
Hayaa ullu, ay term te ohde lai use kari da jihde naal thoRa jya pyaar hovay. jihde naal bohta pyaar hove ous lai te saaDay kol hor waDay waDay tufle ne tolan lai...
BoSS, sirf image gallery?

From Punjabi Urdu Lughat by Urdu Science Board Pakistan:
Patha:
shagird, Pehalwan, chooza, jawaan, bacha, mureed. etc etc (goes into chara and stuff)
So I guess it has varied meanings.
I think too patha means student / shagird .. as this ulla da patha is so common and used so widely it cant be such a serious cursing as relating to someones father.. it simply means an idiot or a fool..
