LAHORE: The Ittehad Bainul Muslimeen Committee, set up by the Punjab government for maintaining religious harmony, brotherhood and tolerance, has unanimously issued a religious code of conduct for all schools of thought. According to the code of conduct, the use of loudspeaker will be banned except for Azaan and Friday sermons in Arabic. No speaker, khateeb or zakir will show disrespect to the Ahle Bait, companions of Holy Prophet (PBUH), the four Caliphs (RA), wives of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), Holy Imams and Imam Mehdi in their speeches. No person belonging to any school of thought will be declared “kafir” (infidel) or “wajibul qatal” (deserving death).

No speech will be made against any school of thought creating hatred. Besides, permission from local administration will be compulsory for holding congregations of all schools of thought. Such meetings would be arranged at a public level in which Ulema of all schools of thought will give proof of national unity and religious harmony by addressing jointly. Ulema of all schools of thought will be given due respect and protection of worship places of all schools of thought will be ensured. There will be a complete ban ondisplay of weapons in meetings, processions, mosques, imambargahs and other worship places.

The code of conduct was approved in the meeting of Ittehad Bainul Muslimeen Committee, held at Aiwan-e-Auqaf on Monday, which was presided over by Provincial Minister for Auqaf and Religious Affairs Ata Muhammad Maneka. Auqaf and Religious Affairs Secretary Saqib Aziz, committee coordinators Mufti Intekhab Ahmed Noori, Alhaj Haider Ali Mirza, Maulana Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi, Dr Abdul Ghafoor Rashid, Alhaj Habib Ullah Bhatti, Dr Sufi Zaheer Ahmed and Auqaf DG were also present on the occasion.

The government will ensure effective monitoring system for the practical enforcement of the code of conduct and the administration will take legal action against violators irrespective of their school of thought. Slogans hurting the feelings, creating hatred and provocation will be avoided completely. As the non-Muslims live with the Muslims of various schools of thought in Pakistan, therefore, according to Shariah, it is the responsibility of the government of Pakistan to protect the life and property and worship places of non-Muslims. Strict legal action would be taken against those desecrating the life and property and worship places of non-Muslims. There will be complete ban on publication and distribution of books, pamphlets, literature, cassettes and websites containing hate material.

Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) chairman Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi while talking to The News said that the historic document signed today, if followed, would create harmony and understanding, leading to elimination of sectarianism and towards the ultimate goal of establishing peace in the country. He said that he had been pressing a 15-point agenda to promote peace and harmony and for eliminating sectarian and religious hatred in the society for over a decade now. “I presented my 15 points in the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), when I became a member of the Council six months ago. Those 15 points are still being actively considered by the CII. I am happy that 9 of those 15 points have been adopted by the government of the Punjab as ‘Code of Conduct’ officially in today’s meeting,” Tahir Ashrafi said.
