Re: UK .. Questions ... so
£3000 was a rough idea, people. As per comments, even £2000 would be good to go salary for a couple in London. bravo!
I would say £2000 is good-to-go outside London, but you need a household income of around £30k to be doing alright in London ... If one person is earning £20k then the second can get a job paying £10k say part-time and be quite well off.
Re: UK .. Questions ... so
Renting properties takes a big cut. If you're getting around £1000.00 a week, even after tax, thats a really decent amount. If you're really struggling with rent, then there's always Housing Benefit which you can apply for, and you can claim for help from the DWP (if you're eligible). It also depends where you live, living in London costs a LOT more than living outside of it, rent (and house) prices have a big difference according to areas. You'll barely get a studio flat at around £600-700, in some places it;s even more (cos of area zones and stuff) - trust me, I work in a housing department and we deal with this stuff a lot. I think you'd need to have either both partners working, or something on around £25K plus to get by on living here. I think it also depends on your standard costs on food, bills, clothes etc etc which really does add up to a lot.
On the button - more benefits to more dependents ... get lots of kids ... is that right? :)
Re: UK .. Questions … so
To sum it up: (per month)
£1000 - very tight even in a less posh living area
£2000 - very tight in an expensive living area
£3000 - Normal
£4000 - You can afford an expensive place and have an above average life
£5000+ - You’re the man! ![]()
Re: UK .. Questions ... so
^£3000 a month in London is normal and you could get by but you would need a lot more than 4 or 5000 a month to afford an expensive place + a comfortable life in at least a middle-class area..
(In many other parts of the country you can have a nice lifestyle for literally half what you'd pay in London)
Re: UK .. Questions ... so
depends where you are. Generally the further north you go, the cheaper it gets
Re: UK .. Questions ... so
A salary of 40K a year is £29,500 after tax and NI; £2500 a month. That is more than enough for a young couple living in Greater London or anywhere else in the country. After rent, bills, car related expenses etc etc you should be able to save. Same stuff applies as in the Pakistan thread. It all depends on your lifestyle. If you keep eating out all the time, can't go a week without shopping for new clothes etc, then it won't be enough.
If the person has a mortgage that is not recent and they paid a decent amount in deposit, mortgage repayments won't be that much (compared to rent) so you can save even more.
Re: UK .. Questions ... so
May be on the private sector, but if it is assured short hold tenancy - then apart from Studio flats or 2 bed apartments, you will not get 3 bed houses in Greater London for that amount ...
2 Beds and cheap but very decent bungalows.
I am talking about Greater Manchester area.
Re: UK .. Questions ... so
Inspired by the thread on Dubai, Can any one answer for London as well?
your hubby will take care of it.
Re: UK .. Questions … so
Tax is huge - and add National insurance! Tax is less on two separate incomes for over lets say £50k and would be considerably higher on 1 person’s £50 k salary.
a quick google search on tax; Net Salary Calculator UK 2014 2015: £36000 annual salary after tax 2009/2010 .. tax is £10k on £36k .. not including the N.I…
Re: UK .. Questions … so
This is the best one to use:
Tax+NI is almost 10K on a 36K salary.
Re: UK .. Questions ... so
I think the threshold for higher rate income tax is £35000 now. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this means a salary of £36000 Per annum will be duducted at 40%?
Re: UK .. Questions ... so
The whole amount is not deducted at 40%. Only the amount you earn above £35,000 (so in this case £1000) is taxed at 40%.
You have your tax free allowance. Then up to £35,000 you are taxed at 20%. Any portion above £35K is subject to 40%.
Re: UK .. Questions ... so
^ thanks for the clarification. I suppose what may seem comfortable to a couple will seem insufficient to someone with 2 or 3 kids. Once you have kids, the expenditure goes through the roof! Anything under £35000 will seem little then...
Re: UK .. Questions ... so
the more the better.
Does that answer your question?
Re: UK .. Questions … so
yes £2000 are enough for a couple in Manchester with a little bit squeeze an provided that these 2000 are after cutting the tax amount.
Am not sure about London though. It’s alot more expensive.
