One thing I don’t understand, why is there such a huge emphasis on memorizing the Holy Qur’an?

Don’t get me wrong, the people who go about it the right way, m’A, that’s great. But from what I’ve seen, people just want their children to memorize Surahs, but are they being taught the translation of the Surahs? Or the lessons behind them?

Either way, this is really sad.

Without making this religion specific, this is the case with say Vishnu Sahasranamam. We were made to chant this every evening. Took 45 min. Add other bhajans and 1.5 h. Were not taught meaning. Not a good way to get kids interested.
