UK hospital introduced world's first burqa-style hospital gowns

Interesting story on how hospitals in the UK are trying to accomodate the needs of a growing, more conservative Muslim population.

A gown designed for female Muslim patients who wish to preserve their modesty for religious reasons is being introduced to hospitals in Lancashire.

The £12 outfits - made in Yorkshire - cover the entire head, neck and body, leaving just a slot for the eyes.

The burqua-style gowns come with trousers, two styles of head-dress and elasticated cuffs to prevent women’s arms from being revealed.

They will be available to patients at in Chorley and Preston from November.

The gowns were trialled at Royal Preston Hospital and proved so successful that a number of other NHS Trusts have also expressed an interest in offering them.

Karen Jacob, linen services manager at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, came up with the idea.

She said: “I noticed a gap in the market and thought that it would be great if there was a gown that helped to preserve a patient’s modesty.”

The gowns are believed to be a world first - and TrusTECH, the NHS organisation which manages innovation for the North West NHS - has the patent.

It means the market for the gowns among the globe’s billion-plus Muslims is immense.

Tim Meadows, customer service manager for Interweave, the West Yorkshire-based firm which makes the garments, believes the demand for the gowns could be huge.

“We think there is a large market out there,” he says.

“We hope it will be a success. We have invested a lot of time and money.”

Re: UK hospital introduced world's first burqa-style hospital gowns

How would this affect the doctor's ability to do their work? One of the reasons for the current gown style is so that in emergency, the doctor doesn't waste with having the patient's clothes removed. Quite often, those seconds can really make a big difference. Would the gown have this feature of accessibility for medical reasons?

I don't know - I think this is rather ridiculous. I don't think wearing a hospital gown makes a woman a whore.

Re: UK hospital introduced world's first burqa-style hospital gowns

okay i was reading sumthing and it said that to preserve modesty, y not cut a hole in your old clothes like eg for childbirth that way the rest of you remains covered.
so i think this works in a similar way.

Re: UK hospital introduced world’s first burqa-style hospital gowns

I meant the whole idea of a burqa in a hospital not your post.

Re: UK hospital introduced world's first burqa-style hospital gowns

Wow. So, let the doctor see the vagina, but not the legs?

Ok.

Re: UK hospital introduced world's first burqa-style hospital gowns

PCG we’re required to follow the rules to the best of our ability, in the case of necessity the pen is lifted but otherwise we have to follow everything.

There's some women who follow Islam in letter and spirit and if they want to cover everything, more power to them, they're not hurting nobody by it.

I've heard my Kaafir colleagues refer to Muslim women who do niqaab as NINJAS/LETTER BOXES and those who do the scarf Hijaab as TURKEYS/VULTURES but that's no big deal because they're Kaafir but it really saddens me to see fellow Muslims dissing their own culture and the people who follow it, to please outsiders.

I'm not a very religious man myself but I respect those who are because even though I might not practice everything, I'd be stupid to deny what I know is the truth.

Re: UK hospital introduced world's first burqa-style hospital gowns

A patient has right to wear what he/she feels better suits his/her cultural beleifs. A patients cultural/religious/personal beleifs must be respected.

As long as the patients are told that a few extra seconds or a minute may be required to remove this particular gown in cases of a dire emergency, its perfectly fine.

I think its a marvellous effort and i salute the people who have done it.

May God Bless Britain

Modesty gowns for female patients

Extra Khercha - putting NHS further behind in funds & being used for hiding faces than saving life. Tomorrow these patients will start screaming that want their face covered even when getting operated by male doctors, even if its DNS (DISEASES OF THE NOSE AND SINUS).

I am not against burqah, for women but at some stages it looks so awkward to have it. Imagine taking your wife for an office party, in burqah.

Re: May God Bless Britain

Well I think its a great idea. Hopefully this will lead to some competition in terms of the design of the gown.

Re: May God Bless Britain

Ya how about embroidery on these gowns with some Atar or Mushk from Saudi Arabia ?

Re: May God Bless Britain

Oh put a sock in it man..

You sound like the BNP/The Sun/Daily Express who have a field day at this kind of thing, blowing everything out of proportion, a bit of extra cloth for a few minoirty patients is hardly going to strain NHS budgets...

Women don't have to cover infront of doctors who are treating them, if you knew even the basics of Islamic law you'd know that "the pen is lifted in cases of neccesity", even Shari'ah requires women to remove their veil when it is neccesary and unavoidable such as testimony in a court...

You have a serious complex.. Ladies who observe purdah don't go to gender-mixed office parties..

Re: May God Bless Britain

I remember seeing these gowns here at GS maybe a year ago, around the same time the 'islamic swimsuits' were initially posted. Where are you pulling out all this old news from Hareem?

Kudos to Karen Jacob for seeing the potential and profiting from it.
