LONDON, May 18: “We condemn the violence in Karachi over the weekend and urge restraint on all parties,” a British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) spokesman said here on Friday.
He was commenting on the recent violence in Karachi and “the position of Altaf Hussain.”
The spokesman said Altaf Hussain was a British citizen, and “like anyone else in the UK, must abide by UK law. Any allegations against him will be thoroughly investigated in accordance with UK law.”
The following is the statement of the spokesman:
“Please find below an FCO comment on the recent violence in Karachi and the position of Altaf Hussain. You can attribute these comments to an FCO spokesman.
— We condemn the violence in Karachi over the weekend and urge restraint on all parties.
— Altaf Hussain is a British citizen and, like anyone else in the UK, must abide by UK law. Any allegations against him will be thoroughly investigated in accordance with UK law.”
The spokesman’s reference to allegations against Altaf Hussain was perhaps the FCO’s response to reports appearing in the British media to the effect that the MQM leader who is a British citizen and lives in London permanently was in part responsible for encouraging his party which is in power in Karachi to resort to violence.
Basically UK is saying that in between te lines that he will not be extradited to Pakistan.
On one hand I would have liked for him to be extradited to Pakistan and be tried and executed for the crimes he has cimmitted against pakistani people,
On the other hand, politicians have a way of escaping charges against them one way or the other in Pakistan.
Now the fact that they have addressed this is a good sign though. Too frikin bad that UK does not have the death penalty. I hope that they try him and put him away for a long time.

Legally you cannot 'extradite' a British citizen from Britain to another country, no matter how evil he is

1- if an extradition treaty exists between the countries a british citizen can be extradited. Neil Entwistle, Gary Mckinoon and Steven Handy are few that were extradited .(I have intentionaly not listed ppl extradited to US on terrirism charges because people would consider them exceptions)
1- secondly, there are workarounds. UK can and has revoked ctizenship in past, in which case extradition is not an issue. example,, abu hamza, wh was last seen begging UK to lift him out of Lebanon because he is not from there (this is after his citizenship was revoked)
British give a fkying rats arse to what happens in Pakistan, rather they will prefer not to extradite him just to show their arrogance.
right and Pakistan has extradited dawood Ibrahim to India?
is that because Pakistan does not give a flying rats arse to what happens in India, rather they will prefer not to extradite him just to show their arrgance?
The former Interior Minister Naseerullah Babar had actually sent 4 different requests to the British to hand over Altaf Hussein during the 2nd PPP government. Each time, the request was denied. If anyone in the UK wants, they can probably get a hold of those letters through the foreign office. Babar had attached proof with the letter demanding the extradition but the British refused to budge, then they went and made Hussein a citizen as well.
The British, by harboring Pakistanis biggest terrorist, have just made themselves even more unpopular with Pakistanis. For Imran to get his way, he will need the legal system to work - he may even have to go to the International Court of Justice...thats the only way to get Hussein to hang.
Acknowledging that he was partly behind the violence is a good sign. Persistent attempts to keep highlighting what he says to his party workers over his telephonic speeches and the resultant violence in Karachi may be one of the strategy to get him to justice eventually. As highlighted earlier his extradition to Pakistan would be of no consequence owing to obvious reasons. Preferably he may be tried there at UK...

Who in their right mind would believe concocted evidence from Babar, the grandfather of the Taliban? Babar would be arrested if he dared go out of Pakistan today.

When the great mush decides to extradite him to Pakistan, only then can the British take that into consideration...How would that dirt bag be extradited when Mush the benevolent-indispensable leader has shown no interest...

That's because Pakistan doesn't have an extradition treaty with India, but they do have won with Britain..which was liberally utilized by mush to hand over bodies to MI5 to bloat up his swiss accounts...
what you forget is that no musharraf govt took the initiative to work with UK to develop a 2-way extradition treaty. This is the first extradition treaty UK has with any muslim country. Not only would it help Pakistan extradite criminals who go hide in Uk, but Uk would also be able to extradite the morons who engage in 'honor killings" in UK or parental abduction and then run and hide in Pak.
This is different than the UN's terrorist bombing convention which was signed off on by both UK and Pakistan aong others, but teh scope is limited to terrorist bombing suspects.

who told you that? Altaf I hope... If extradition treaty is in place then anyone can be extradited regardless of nationality. But given how much western countries give a damn about terrorism against third world you can sleep easy, the SOB won't be handed over..Not yet atleast.
He will only be handed over if the Pakistani government buys planes, subs etc from the British. Once they do, then they will put Altaf in one of those planes or subs and ship is murdering backside to Pakistan.
Thats the way Intl politics works, Im afraid. Either you have the might of America, or you play economic games with the bigger states to get them to help u out.
