UK Bhangra

Just interested in knowing what you guys think of Bhangra music, I’ve seen a couple of threads about Bhangra. But I want to know how many Bhangra fans are there outside the UK market and by this I’m referring to the UK Bhangra, which is a mix of hip hop, R & B and stuff.
I was just listening to I think it was Capital FM 98.5 radio, those of you who live in and around London probably know what which one I’m talking about. Anyways they had like an half an hour report on Bhangra and one of the points which was raised was about the asian generation growing up.
The presenter asked Peter, judge from the Pop Idol contest in UK about his opinion, I always seem to forget his second name, anyways he said something on the lines of

“I feel sorry for the asian kids growing up in UK, I really do as they are stuck in between the european culture and the black culture from america and are struggling to find their own”

I’m not saying that those were his exact words, but if someone else heard it, maybe they can correct me though that was the main jist. Anyways, some how agree with the comment not so much to the music but to do with our generation at the moment here from my observation as most of the guys want to be like and look like black guys and girls dress like there kali friends. It maybe the case in the music, I’m not sure. On the other hand, the people doing this music are trying to give some recognition to their culture or so they appear to say so anyways.

So, what are your views? In your opinion, does this sort of music does justice to the real Bhangra music? To what extent do you agree with Peter or not? And who’s your favourite artist in the Bhangra Music at the mo?

Apologies if I have offended anyone.

Bismah, check the thread:

**UK: Bhangra **

My list of favs is there along with some pics

Well that guy is kinda true in a sense.

If you look at groups from Birmingham’s own B21, RDB, XLNC, they didn’t have to act black to make it big between the Asian Kids of UK.

I may be living in Canada, but I really enjoy UK Bhangra, and the amount of effort is put into it, by some people like Panjabi MC, Bally Jagpal, etc. Who protray Punjabi culture with a mix of Western music, but to a good extent.

Sure there is people like Trix MC, So Solid Singh, LL Cool Singh, etc and many many other DJ’s, who are amatures, which mix a lot of R&B into their music, cutting out the true sense of Punjabi Bhangra.
My question to those guys is, “Is it necessary to put black music into every song”?

I really enjoyed the new album Dhol Cutz, which had great Bass, beats and yet no need to add Rap music into the mix (at least for not half the song).

Here is a interesting article to read about Bhangra music being a Rip Off:

But anyways, I really enjoy UK Bhangra. Cranking it up in your car, going for long drives, and downloading all the latest albums is a :k: from my side

About kids acting like black people.. hey it happens here too. Sure there is a limit to everything, but to talk and walk like them, ummm no, not cool.

UK Bhangra music ...well here is my tupence worth. Personally im not a great fan of Bhangra music ...same beat, same words repeated over and over, hip hop style videos featuring a guy miming to a digitized voice surrounded by semi naked women strutting their stuff. Creativity has gone down the bog hole and every tom, deeep and hari has joined the band wagon.

Outside the main asian cities, i dont think any cares much about Bhangra at all. Its confined to desi clubs and BMW's driving up and down the broadway southall and hopefully will stay that way.

As for Peter, i think he is far from the truth. He needs to broaden his horizons , take a look a the bigger picture instead of confining himself to a bunch of youths in baggy jackets hanging around Leister square. Desi culture is alive and kicking ... every asian person is surrounded by it.

My favourite artist ? Hmmmm .... there was a song called Teri Meri Gal bangayee ... dunnno who sang it. But it was wonderful with a cracking video !
