This is a perfect way for the dumb Uighurs to lose the world’s sympathy pretty quickly. Only gullible Muslims would side with a group willing to join al-Qaeda in droves.

I sympathize with the Uighurs but if they are dumb enough to join al-Qaeda, say bye-bye to world sympathy. The world will err on the side of China, no matter how brutal they are. Rebiya Kadeer's career will be over.
And this isn't a religious war. Muslims in China live relatively well; they just don't have a tolerance for separatists. If al-Qaeda and the ilk were to read a book or two and see how tolerant China has been to Muslims (Mao's forces consisted of some Muslims as well), then they would think twice.
This could spell disaster for Pakistan. If it becomes the headquarters for an international jihad which has China as one of its targets China will take swift action. The US has been soft on Pakistan but I doubt China will be! The question is how far would China go? Would it only exert immense economic and diplomatic pressure or would it be willing to bomb terror bases in Pakistan and even send ground troops?
