Well, I wanted to know if Shias and Shiites are the same thng. Someone told me yes, but did not explain further. So... why are there two differnet names?

Shias are the muslim way the word is written. Shiites is the goray way. They are one and the say thing. Just like Egypt is Egypt to the rest of the western world. To us they are Misr. Its just the same place different names. In this case Shias are called Shiites because they think it is the proper pural form for shia.

It's the letter** ﺔ **in arabic at the end of the word. Whilst the english equvalent letter is "T", in arabic it is silent .
So if you spell the word in english as it sounds in Arabic, you get Shia. If you spell it in English as close as possible to spelling, letter for letter, in arabic, you get Shiite.
