My computer has had one of those catastrophic screwups we all wake up in the middle of the night screaming about.
My disk is in three partitions. First one is windowsxp, second is ubuntu, third is a data dump. They’re all NTFS. My XP is really screwed up, every 15 seconds a “USB Device Not recognized” message pops up even though theres nothing plugged in. But no biggie, I use ubuntu anyway.
And heres where the problem is. For some reason my ubuntu goes into a grub shell when I boot into it. It doesnt load up the OS.
I understand this happens when XP goofs about with the Ubuntu boot file or something. But I’ve tried following the instructions I could find online but it doesnt seem to work.
I need an ubuntu whizkid to help me restore my OS. And I need a windows whizkid to make my life bearable until then by making it stop flash annoying messages all over the place.
how do i reinstall grub? im reading i have to do it through the Ubuntu disk, any way to do that on usb? what option exactly is it that would tell it to install on mbr not ubuntu partition?

Does ubuntu cd let you get-into/mount the current install?
if it does, when you get to the shell just run "grub-install"
