Ubuntu for Phones

So Ubuntu decides to take on Android and iOS and Windows Phone etc etc.
Introducing Ubuntu on your phone. Rejoice!
The OS they couldn’t get on desktops are now being pushed to phones

Re: Ubuntu for Phones

It ain’t a bad OS :frowning:

Re: Ubuntu for Phones

I’m curious to find out how it does on Androids.

Re: Ubuntu for Phones

Was discussing it with colleagues at work today since we all have Ubuntu at work and it would be great to integrate phone with desktops…

Re: Ubuntu for Phones

wasnt android supposed to be linux tailormade for mobile devices? is ubuntu going to have a separate mobile kernel?

Re: Ubuntu for Phones

its gonna be very unique os but its in very early stages

Re: Ubuntu for Phones

Ok so even for mobile phones we are going in to same black hole of ‘‘a different app for a different OS’’ . Now a company would have to come up with four different apps for iOS, Android, Ubuntu, J2ME etc.

I predict that in the end we’ll all fall back to one platform for all i.e. WEB . Companies would be way better off if they invest in mobile websites than apps .

Re: Ubuntu for Phones

Doesnt look like it. This is what it says on the site:

Ubuntu and Android share the same kernel. When docked, the Ubuntu OS boots and runs concurrently with Android. This allows both mobile and desktop functionality to co-exist in different runtimes.

Shared services and applications are delivered using a Convergence API module which ensures the tight integration between desktop and mobile environments. Work is balanced across the cores of the phone. When the handset is not docked, both CPU cores transfer their full power to Android.

Re: Ubuntu for Phones

Which company would be behind the OS since ubuntu is heavily run by the community.

Cool story bro.

Re: Ubuntu for Phones

Actually ubuntu is from Canonical

Backed by Canonical

Canonical is the global software vendor that provides commercial and design support to the Ubuntu project. Today, our hardware enablement team supports the pre-installation of Ubuntu on millions of new PCs shipped worldwide, annually.

Thanks to Canonical’s relationships with its OEM partners, Ubuntu has an enormous retail presence in key emerging economies, with branded merchandising and trained retail staff in over 1,000 stores.

Re: Ubuntu for Phones

Of course, nice words since you work there! But seriously, with all the fanboi love, Linux really has no penetration in the consumer market. As a friend put it best, Linux kids were the ones boasting in the nineties that how they are free compared to the evil Microsoft, but who has time for figuring out driver issues (lack thereof) just to save a few bucks? Fast forward a few years later, many of these Linux lovers now are Mac users and can’t stop gushing about the Linux familiarity of OS X though the cost and lack of choice argument in appledom has suddenly vanished. Btw, I have had used little bit of Ubuntu and it left a bad taste in the mouth like a bad version of OS X. The only Linux form that I have liked is Linux mint.

Work where?
