The COMPLIANCE system—world over—has taken a very strong grip and the account holders by the throat—on money laundering issues!
This is an essential part of AML & KYC excercise…globally.
AML – > Anti Money Laundering.
KYC—> Know Your Customer.
Back her in Pakistan…an account opened without KYC and AML excercise…the bank can be heavily penalized–much so much–the branch license could be in problem.
***Drive from Dubai (Al Mulla Plaza) to Sharjah (Buheira Corniche) was 8.5 minutes…I am myself a car comber-----that practically every weekend–we were at Ajman for paans and that doodh patti with a group of friends–around 7 cars!
***Annual rental of centrally airconditioned four bed fully furnished apartment our bank gave us–was Dhs. 50k—now unthinkable!
***Cinema halls like STRAND (opp Pak Consulate) now no more–was a treat with family…unlike the cineplexes of today…where… to acquire a ticket is a test of nerves:(
***The entertainment groups from India & Pakistan were a treat to watch with tickets not above Dh.100/-
Ali Mian…just ten days back I went to DOOOBAI…for two nights…some conference on compliance by middle east banks & UAE Central bank…and it was HORRENDOUS to just travel on roads…from Mall of Emirates…our hotel KAZI ICONIC…and on day of departure back for Karachi…it was a sigh of relief!!!
My stay at Abudhabi and Dubai of yesteryears–is a dream so sweet that all turns sour when I go to Dubai now…and will again (ugh) for shoot enroute onwards in mid-Dec.
It's all about timing! I've mastered the art now..I know when to leave my house! Takes me no more than 15 mins to reach Deira! I love the resorts...the malls the cinema's the extravagant life of Dubai! And now even the weather is superb!
My first posting (at my bank) was in BAHRAIN (1975-1981)
***Some of my best friends were Bahrainis…including the local based BAHRAINI employees ***(Anwer Kerim, Noora, Fatima, Mona, Kooheji…and others..who are STILL in touch with me. Noora came to attend my daughter’s marraige in 2005 because my eldest was the dear one to all my colleagues in Bahrain..and specially of Noora Halabi) and some Bahraini officials including a minister..who is still a Minister.
There wasn’t an iota of feeling that BAHRAINIZATION must shape up…!
My second posting took me to DOHA-QATAR (1982-84)..where again, my best friends were Qataris (and Hindus)…and no feeling whatsoever…that they are the country people and we expartriates!
***My third posting was at Abudhabi (1984-1990) and Dubai (1990-1993) which saw me get pretty close on friendship with UAE Nationals that even now when i go…and I do frequently ***( in fact i am there in Dubai next weekend for some sign off at the Stanchart..) my UAE National friends come running to meet me…offer me privileges and travel facilities etc.
The whole issue—I reckon, has been created by US only by not following their laws…by breaking them and making life for fair and honest ones miserable that the hosts are forced to adopt strict majors…as a matter of no choice!
THE GULF semantics and their moods and system..in real sense..has been understood well by our “neighbors” that they keep increasing. I know they come on low salaries etc…that the market for Pakistanis has gone way below…but then again…the behavior of neighbors has been far more to MEET THE EYE then ours!
The only thing, which however–NOW—irks me…is the horrendous traffic and skyrocketing prices…where the profit margin is amazingly higher—then it was during our GOLDEN era!!!
Shuaib u have time untill Dec..I went there a couple of time but the lines are scary! UAE changes rules every half an hour..why so surprised?
I am going on leave this sat and will be back on 31 Dec.
What scares me most is that this news item came from Khaleej Times which is a main stream news paper also I have heard from different people that its being announced on radio as well.
Now yes they change their stance in matter of seconds but so far this ID card thing is complete mess.
It seems like a hoax to me...they can't do that! Just to pressurize people into makes the cards..Aisha lets go! Festival city was really nice yesterday..weather is amazing!
