Effective 2011 Visa & Passport bilateral agreement changes between the 2 nations
Canadian now require to obtain UAE VISA prior to arrival in UAE hence no more visa on arrival.
UAE asked Canadian Military Base in UAE to vacate and move else where with 48 hour notice.
^ This was in Oct 2010.
UAE did not allow Canadian Defense Minister to ‘Land’ in Dubai hence his flight was diverted else where
It all started when UAE & Canada failed to reach any lucrative agreement to boost ETIHAD & EMIRATES
flight frequency from 3 to 6. These negotiations were on going since past 4 years
Canadian Military base serving Afghanistan is temporarily anchored in Pakistan.
However Pakistan has said that they are still reviewing Canadian Request for more concrete arrangement .
This is not an ant fight, and least threatening is arguable. This is a move by a country to reduce competition. This is quite big in the airline world.
Air Canada, and Star Alliance carriers, are not doing well in the competition to Asia, particularly South Asia. They want to aggregate all their traffic through Frankfurt and other European hubs. Moreover, particularly for South Asia, the service by these carriers sucks and is on old equipment.
Emirates and Etihad represent a real threat to them. Their service is top notch, and they have new equipment. Particularly for South Asians, like most of us on this forum, this is very important. AC wants to reduce our options for travel because they cannot compete.
I don’t think there’s an element of humor here, but then again, you never know who your audiences are, Right?
Canadian Forces were based in UAE fighting and rebuilding Afghanistan (Supposedly)
UAE Delegation was in Ottawa Oct 15, 2010 and left on 19th Oct empty handed.
Oct 20th and onward incidents are as mentioned above,
On Air Canada’s instigation Canadians are paying ‘Fuel Surcharge + Airport fee + Fed-Pro Taxes’ since 2003 , So if a ticket cost is $150 Toronto-London-Toronto you have to add $310 to the price = $ 460.- inclusive
The point is, If Air Canada is unable to survive despite these extra levies then why they should not be privatized ?
Or why AC should have any ‘Say’ in the matter of more slots to other carriers,
Not extending more landing slots to other carriers are not only depriving this government with more revenue sources, which is more substantial if you ask me, but also indicates a very ‘harsh’
business mentality is in play which is stupid and trivial.
